The Social and Political Movement:
Black Lives Matter Global Foundation Inc.

All Black Lives Matter. Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit
organization that started in 2013 after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the trial of Trayvon
Martins’ shooting death. Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc. was founded by
Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi, and is now being lead by members in a network
of over 40 chapters globally. These three Black organizers created with the mission to ‘build
local power to intervene when violence was inflicted on Black communities by the state and
vigilantes’. #BlackLivesMatter was created to help propel the conversation of black liberation
and continues to do so internationally. Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc. is a
political and social movement against incidents of police brutality and racially motivated violence
and discrimination against black people, to create space for black imagination, innovation and
joy.
The identities represented is all black lives; men, women, queer, and trans. This
organization is compiled by people who have a similar experience around racism, prejudice,
unlawfulness, murder, and more.
Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc. engagement is political and social. From the
hashtag trending social media, to the brightly colored momentous street art, to the uprising
support and change in voting habits, to the representative who fights for our freedom daily. In
June of 2018, activist gather from across the county to fight for the humane treatment of
immigrants at the San Diego border. Members gather to fight causes both online and nationally.
Newly elected Vice President Kamala Harris is the first Black and women to become a vice
president.
