Reflection Paper

The Qur’an

Fazlur Rahman starts the chapter by highlighting the different characteristics of the Qur’an as to how the
tone changes between the Medinese and the Meccan surahs. The tone of the Meccan surahs is derived
to be more intense as compared to the Medinese. Mainly due to the fact that the content of both the
types of Surahs is different. While Meccan surahs highlight the moral and religious exhortations,
Medinese surahs are more inclined towards highlighting the social and communal responsibilities of
Muslims.

Fazlur Rahman further takes into consideration the point that the Quran was revealed in the form of an
idea- word inspiration rather than through any other means of communication as mentioned in the
Quran itself. He also emphasizes on the fact that one cannot separate the Prophet from the process of
revelation of the Quran as believed by the orthodox point of view (mainly inspired by AHadith). He made
it clear that the Quran is the word of Both Allah and the Prophet for it was revealed on the Prophets
heart and hence cannot be external to him. Hence this makes Fazlur Rahman’s questioning the accuracy
of Hadith in the previous chapter more valid.

As Fazlur Rahman later places emphasis on the teachings of Quran, he shows how the Quran not only
shows God as the creator of mankind and the One who prescribes the moral code of conduct for him
but also the very creative God of the entire universe. While making his point we also realise how each
and every creation of God speaks of his orderly and merciful nature. Fazlur Rahman also emphasizes as
to how God used amr to create the entire universe. Amr is the order, orderliness and command that
God uses to communicate with his beings which therefore puts every creation of His into its place.

The Quran very clearly mentions the rank and position of women in the society liberating them from the
tyrannical attitudes of the Arabs then. It also gives the slaves their rights and makes it clear for most
Muslims to treat them like family and release them if they are able to lead a decent lifestyle on their
own.

Just like the previously mentioned laws the Quran mentions others too regarding different aspects of
life. However it is noticed that most of the laws and legislations mentioned are precisely in accordance
to the society in which the Quran was revealed. If one refers to the Quran for its literal meaning (nass)
one may feel alienated from what was mentioned since the time and the settings are now extremely
different. Hence leading to misunderstandings while interpreting Quranic text. To solve this grave issue
people resorted to the different commentaries made by Muslim scholars aka Ilm e tafseer. These
commentaries were mainly formulated by keeping in mind various aspects of the revelation of the verse.
In order to make it more accurate.
