Course Reflection
The main takeaway that I am taking from this course is the writing process. I
never really thought of it or paid any attention to it until I took this class. Before I would
submit my papers, I would read through them 2-3 times after I made some changes to
make sure it’s exactly how I want it to sound and to make sure it makes sense. I would
also have my sister read it and give me feedback and I would edit my paper again
according to what she said. I only had 3 major assignments in this course. The first one
was a flash narrative, the second one was a rhetorical analysis, and the third one was a
portrait of my writing life.
The flash narrative assignment was one of the easiest assignments. All I had to
do was either make up a story, write about something random, or write a story about my
life. No matter what I chose to do my story had to have all of the 5 senses. I needed to
have detailed descriptions so that when the reader (my professor) would read it, they
can feel or picture one of the senses.
The rhetorical analysis was a bit tricky for me. I had to read 2 articles and
compare them. As I was doing it, I had trouble figuring out what to write. This was an
academic paper, which meant that you had to make connections between both articles
and figure out why the authors wrote what they wrote. I just summarized what both
articles said the first time I turned it in. After my professor graded them, he said that he
would give us a second chance to redo them for extra points. I then realized what I had
to do and I got a better understanding of what a rhetorical analysis is .
The portrait of my writing life was just a reflection of myself as a writer. I had to
write about what I learned in this class, how I view myself as a writer, what techniques

do I use, etc. As soon as I started writing I did not stop. Everything was coming to me so
quickly that I knew what to write and I knew how I wanted it to sound. This assignment
really made me look back on my writing years in high school and how I need to elevate
my writing now that I am in college.
