1. a) Why is it difficult to heat treat or harden wrought iron?
b) Describe in short, the two stages involved in the formation of new phase in pure metals.
2. Distinguish pearlite and bainite in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties.
3. a) Explain the diffusion mechanism involved in the diffusion of impurities such as carbon,
oxygen in metal alloys.
b) Classify the alloying elements of steel according to their effect on matrix.
4. a) Draw a cubic unit cell, and within that cell a (122) plane.
b) Express the relative orientation of Burgers vector and dislocation line for screw
dislocation.
5. a) Discuss the required features of impurity atoms and host atoms that determines their
solubility in substitutional solid solution.
b) Discuss the effect of addition of chromium on properties of steel.
6. Discuss how annealing heat treatment process is different from quenching. Explain in term
