3A. SMART(ER) GOALS
SMART(ER) goals are:
• Simple – A stranger should understand your goals without explanation;
• Measurable – Make the end point objective and trackable;
• Actionable – Always start your goals with a verb (Do, Read, Learn etc…);
• Realistic – If it’s not practical, break it down further or set a process goal;
• Time-bound – Set a clear date and milestones for accomplishing your goal;
• Exciting – Find ways to inspire and incentive yourself to finish; and
• Relevant. – Always tie goals back to your big-picture thinking and projects.
Whenever you’re setting new goals, use the template below to make sure they
stick to this time-tested formula:
My goal is to [S] .
I’ll know it’s complete when [M] .
To accomplish it I will [A]
which is realistic because [R1] .
I’m excited about this goal because [E]
