Grade 6 Science Date: Dec.
7th, 2020
Instructor: Liam Pafford
Stage 1: Desired Results
GLO(s):6–7 Observe, describe and interpret the movement of objects in the sky; and identify pattern
and order in these movements.
Learning
Outcome(s) SLO(s):
6.7.11 – Identify technologies and procedures by which knowledge, about
planets and other objects in the night sky, has been gathered.
Students will explain the importance of the different Mars explorations being significant in our
Learning knowledge of space.
Objectives Students will think critically about the importance of technology in science, highlighting the
significance in space discovery.
Stage 2: Assessment Evidence
Summative Formative
Completion of the comprehension questions and reading
Assessment Assessment
Stage 3: Learning Experience
Tech Resources
to Do to Bring
Time Sequence and Description Notes
Students will start with the What in the World reading:
- I will start by showing the moon exploration video.
- I will break students into groups and have them discuss and write on
sticky notes why we should go to the moon.
- After about 5-10 mins of discussing with pairs I will pull them back
15 mins
to the board where I will have different categories already on the
board (Knowledge advancement, exploration, for education) and we
will categorize their ideas based on the categories on the board.
- We will then rank the sticky notes and take a vote on which category
we think is the most important.
Students will read the space resource and answer the comprehension
20 mins questions in pairs that I have previously made. Once they complete the
reading, we will go over the questions together on the board
5 mins - Name all 8 planets
- Pneumonic Device (My Very Educated Mother Just Gave Us
Nachos)
- Asteroid Belt separating sets of 4
- Inner planets vs. outer planets

Show the Mars exploration technology countdown and the ingenuity video to
show some examples of technology in space
Title of Artifact: Technology in space
Date: December 7th, 2020
Focus: To integrate technology into the classroom and relate it to the sky science unit about space.
Applicable TQS Competency(ies): TQS#3
This artifact is about: This artifact is a lesson plan I put together about the planets and other objects in space.
We began the lesson by talking about planets and I ended it by showing them the newest mars helicopter called
Ingenuity. This launched from Earth in June of 2020 and set to land on Mars in February of 2021. This was really
cool to show the kids because they love technology and love space exploration. The fact that this is heading to
Mars during our space unit was amazing. We were able to watch a countdown of when it is landing which
showed how far away from Earth and Mars the shuttle is. It helped in my lesson following this one about the
vastness of the universe because the shuttle was travelling so quickly through space. When we compared the
speed it is travelling through space to the speed limits on land, it was met with a very enthused reaction. This
lesson resonated with them because they still talk to me about it and ask me questions about the “Mars
Helicopter”.
I chose to include this artifact because: I chose to include this artifact because it shows that I am up to date
with current knowledge and technology. When planning this lesson I had planned on showing them videos of the
old mars rover. This was so much better because it is new, exciting and happening as I taught the lesson. I am
hoping that they will get to see more about Ingenuity and what it is exploring when it lands and begins to hover
around Mars.
From this artifact I learned: I learned that it is very easy and very effective to include up to date knowledge in
my lessons where appropriate and applicable. I am not sure if this group is just more into science than Social
Studies, however they were way more interested in this current space technology than they were learning about
how democracy was formed. This group absorbed a lot from this lesson and I think it had everything to do with
showing them Ingenuity and it being a very new part of space exploration.
The way(s) in which I grew or changed as a teacher as a result of this artifact is/are: I grew by realizing how
simple it is to blow some kids minds. They were absolutely awestruct when they saw the video of Ingenuity
flying through Mars air. Something as simple as an up to date video of some space technology caught their
attention and got them very engaged and excited for the lesson. I wish I would have started the lesson by showing
them this instead of ending it with this. Either way it is something they will remember and think about each time
they think about technology in space.
