Design and Implementation of Web Based Crime Reporting System - Samrit Basnet

This document discusses the design and implementation of a web-based crime reporting system. The key points are: 1) The system aims to allow public reporting of crimes online to make the reporting process more accessible and efficient compared to traditional paper-based methods. 2) It will use a waterfall methodology and include features like a dashboard for authorities to view crime data and locations. The public will be able to report crimes and get feedback. 3) Potential issues include risks of fake reports and how to ensure effective communication between the public and security agencies. However, the system overall aims to help solve crimes more quickly and maintain law and order.

Introduction

The pursuit to manage crimes and keep the law and order in society grows and diversity of
human intention and relation thrive. An ideal society is runnel by laws and regulations that
are agreed upon and the measurable consequences will be given for any member who breaks
the specific component of the legal infrastructure.

As the reported crime case has been increased rapidly in our country. I would like to propose
a web system which will assist in reporting any kind of criminal activity on the website which
will help the solve of case without need to go to police station to file a case. After the
completion of the project, we can report the case from anywhere from the web and
investigation authorities can look further into the project. Until recently, the reporting and
investigation had always been manual. Individuals who have complaints will go to the station
do some inquiry with respected post (Police, Corps) and give the detail statement of the crime
that may need their attention.

The system used by CID, police has still been paper based and is slow compared to online
web and mobile based system. Thanks to the technology it has opened the paths for new ways
to perform reporting of any crime.

I am looking forward to develop an all-encompassing web platform that reports all manners
of crimes, open to all members of the public, suggestive, interpretative and enlightening. The
platform will assist for various security agencies working in Nepal to share and gather
evidence and mobilize the society for certain cause to bring better policy and investigation
method.
Aims and Objectives of Study

To develop a web application which demonstrates the process of reporting, evaluating and
investigating crimes in Nepal and minimize the threat and balance order of the nation.

Our Objective is to propose a system that feed for reporting of various kind of crimes, give
feedback and sustain the process of crime investigation and correction.

Scope of the Project

We will create a responsive web application which will provide a platform to report all
manners of crimes occurring throughout the nation. We will provide a dashboard where the
authorities can view the criminal activities occurring and the location of the crime. General
public will also be able to freely report, get feedback without fear. The web application is
usable across the nation and will be examined thoroughly.

Problem Statement:-

Here are some of the notable problems that can occur in the future for the project as follows;

1) Risk of fake data to be posted as anyone can have access

2) Reporting to security agencies still remain complicated.

3) Lack of feedback for the member for the society in website.

Literature Review

Well and meaningful societies in the world frown at crime and any social vices that
undermine the collective safety and values that have been adopted in that society. Crime
persists as long as human society exist, therefore there is a continuous effort and legitimacy
to report, investigate and provide convincing evidences to prosecute individuals who
perpetrate any criminal activity. The word Crime originated from the Latin word Crimen
dubbed charge or offence. Shodghangha (2011) projected Crime as a function of the adoption
of standards by the society rather than individualistic standards, that is, the society gradually
determine what is perceived as good value and bad acts and proscribe possible consequences.
Tappan (2001) defined Crime as an intentional act in violation of criminal law which is
without an excuse. Sampson et.al (1993) also defined Crime any act or omission that is
forbidden by law that can be punished by imprisonment and/or fine after due hearing in a law
court. Elizabeth (2003) expressed a holistic definition of Crime as an act that is not just
harmful to some individuals but also to the state or general public. The determination of what
is obnoxious or sane is determined through a long and continuous complex interactions and
reactions among members of a society. As society varies so what is considered as crime
varies from people to people. Wilson et.al (1985) argued that there cannot be a general theory
to define Crime for all societies because of the diversity of human society and culture. More
so, Gottfredson et.al (1990) and Sampson et.al (1993) had a different view, stating that
differences in cultures and societies do not really matter but the common characteristics in
cultures can be identified and a general theory can be formulated to prescribe what the
society should adopt as a crime, that is criminologist should not isolate crimes but to look for
the commonality in crimes so as to propose a general rule to determining Crime for all
societies. The dynamism of culture and unpredictability of human make it unlikely to have a
general set of rules for all human societies.

Another important component of the justice system is the crime investigation and
prosecution. The general knowledge of what Crime constitutes is not enough without
ultimately punishing the offender to serve as deterrent and freeing the falsely accused persons
in such occasions. The general justice system constitute the laws; which indicate what Crime
is, the law apparatuses like security agencies, people and processes that are followed to
implement justice. The people who are to be served by the justice system may soon begin to
lose confidence and underreport or result to jungle justice to redress their anger if existing
justice system continues to fail with time. Criminal justice system also constitute the system
of practices and institutions of Government directed at ensuring social control, deterring and
mitigating crime or sanctioning individuals who violate laws with criminal penalties and
rehabilitation efforts
Methodology:-
I have used waterfall model system to develop the reporting system because it give the
researchers an easy overview of the software based on the required specifications, and to
present the general flow on the development of the application

Fig 1: Waterfall methodology

Waterfall approach was first SDLC model to be widely used by software engineer to get
overall success of the project. In the waterfall, the whole process of the whole process of
software development is divided into various phase.
Figure 1 shows the model used for the software development which is the Modified Waterfall
Methodology and the stages undertaken in developing the Crime Management and Reporting
System. And in addition, its intensive documentation and planning make it work well for
projects in which quality control is a major concern. The proponents made further
adjustments to the existing system for better services and crime management.
Software Requirement:-

i. Operating System: Windows (2000, Vista, 7 ,8,10) ,Ubuntu and catatonia macos

i. Graphical User Interface: HTML, CSS & java script

iii. Application Logic: JS & React

iv. Database: Node

v. IDE/Workbench:Vs code

vi. Chrome

Hardware Requirement:-
i. Processor: Intel I3 Or more

ii. 2 GB ram (minimum main memory space recommended)

iii. 560 – 760 MB minimum hard disk space (depending on features installed)

SWOT Analysis;-

After doing some research on this I found lots of website and resources regarding the system.
But all of them were not in good state and not secured. But There is weakness to my project
to as there is high risk of false cases can arise and also in terms of strength my project can be
useful to public as It saves time as a person can lodge an FIR without going to the police
station or govt. organization. This online crime reporting system could be a resolution to all
the issues which are associated with culprit details, violation of the law or anything which is
unconstitutional.
Conclusion

The Online Crime Reporting System is a web application system which is too much helpful
for all the common people, government organization and different societies. This is based on
a very simple and non-complex approach. This has been created as a safety measure for all
section of people and societies. Anything which is against the law or anyone who is violating
the law will now have some fear as now filing an FIR is much easier than it was before. The
Online Crime Reporting System is a success with satisfaction from both the people and
government organizations. This has been tested and is a success. So, this make it much more
efficient
