Word Problems
Complete the following word problems. Remember to read the questions carefully and
show your working.
1. I won the long jump competition at Normanhurst Public School with a jump of 3.85m. The
person who came second jumped 2.72m. How much further did I jump? Record your
answer in centimetres (cm).
2. The route from my classroom to the canteen is a total of 523m in length. The route to
NOOSH is 449m longer. How many metres is the route from my classroom to NOOSH?
3. Three pencil cases are put in a line across the table. The first pencil case is 34cm long, the
second is 54cm and the third pencil case is 44.5cm. What is the total length of all three
pencil cases? Record your answer in metres (m).
4. The perimeter of an octagon is 96cm. What is the length of each side?
5. Mr Rosewarn measured the area of his backyard. The total area for his backyard was
36m2. Give two possible measurements for the length and width of his backyard. Draw a
picture to match each solution.
6. Ms De Palo has 3m of ribbon that she needs to cut. She needs to make sure that each
piece she cuts is 10cm long. How many pieces of ribbon will she have?
7. Mr Bob needed to cut some wire around the outside of the of the school gate. He needed to
be precise with each cut so that the wire could be re-used. Mr Bob made three equal cuts
that each measured 144cm in length. How long was the wire before any cuts were made?
