Instruction Set List
How to apply a knee brace on a basketball player with a bad knee
Intro: The person performing the task will be those who injured their knee or those helping the
person who got injured. To do this task you will have to buy/have a knee brace.
Audience: The audience for this instruction set list is for basketball players or anyone in sports
medicine, such as they are the main ones to help players with their injuries.
Goal: After reading this instruction setlist, basketball players will know how to apply a knee
brace in case of a knee injury.
When: Players should wear a knee brace after injury so their knee can get better. This can also
occur before the game.
Safety Measures: If you decide to not wear a knee brace it can impair healing and their/your
knee can end up with more knee damage. If a basketball player uses the knee brace as they are
told to do there should not be any additional knee problems.
Items: Properly fitted knee brace (Hinged, Compression/Sleeves, Wraparounds, Bands/Straps,
Custom, Open/Close Popliteal, and Open/Close Patella), pick which knee brace to wear based on
your injury. Such as different injuries might require different compression.
Time Estimate: It should take about two weeks for the reader's knee to heal. The time estimates
can vary on what kind of injury you have received. When putting the knee brace on it should
take approximately 6-10 minutes.
Steps:
1. Pick the best knee brace for your injury
2. Roll up jeans/pants so that the brace goes directly onto the skin.
3. If you have a wrap brace (most common) place the inside of the pad onto the knee and
then wrap the straps around. If you have a slip on a brace, slip your food into the brace.
And slide the brace up until it rests where the injury is.
4. Most knee braces have a small hole. Align this hole to where it does not pinch your skin.
5. Tighten the straps: You should be able to fit two fingers into the space between leg and
brace. Tightening the bottom strap helps the knee brace be more stable.
6. Start over if the brace slides past the knee.

Usability Memo
Test goals:
I want my instruction set to be clear enough for people to follow
I want users to do this efficiently and effectively
I want users to be healed for their next basketball playing performance.
What do I want to know about my instruction set?
How long did it take you to complete the instruction set?
Would you recommend this instruction set to someone with a hurt knee?
Was there anything about this instruction set that you found confusing?
Test Protocol:
Put yourself in the basketball player's position. Your role is to put on a knee brace in your injured
knee. One group member should be asking the questions, one group member should follow up
with you at least twice a week, and another group member should time you and see how long it
takes you to but on the knee brace. After performing the task and following the two weeks follow
up you and your group members should come together and discuss your findings.
Usability Test Results
1. It took me about 8 minutes to complete the instruction set list.
2. I would recommend this to basketball players and people who do not have any prior
knowledge to doing this. I would just recommend putting on the knee brace standing such
as it will be easier to put on your leg and it will also allow you to fit it more comfortable.
3. One of the things I found confusing was the picking which knee brace was the one that
you will need to use, such as each knee brace has a different purpose. It is hard trying to
pick out what knee brace you should use for the type of injury you have.
Instruction Set List Adjustments
1. Go to a sports medicine doctor or just your normal doctor and see what kind of knee
brace they recommend.
2. Buy/Get the knee brace doctors recommend
3. Roll up jeans/pants so that the brace goes directly onto the skin.
4. If you have a wrap brace (most common) place the inside of the pad onto the knee and
then wrap the straps around. If you have a slip on a brace, slip your food into the brace.
And slide the brace up until it rests where the injury is.
5. Most knee braces have a small hole. Align this hole to where it does not pinch your skin.
6. Tighten the straps: You should be able to fit two fingers into the space between leg and
brace. Tightening the bottom strap helps the knee brace be more stable.
7. Start over if the brace slides past the knee.
