The Fertile Margin

Ancient Egypt was mostly desert, but along the Nile River there was a thin strip of fertile land where people could live. As the Nile flowed north from Aswan to the Delta near Cairo, on each side of the river there was a verdant margin suitable for settlements and agriculture. The ancient Egyptians built their civilization along this fertile strip irrigated by annual flooding of the Nile.
