Mathematics 1 MTH-100: Function Notation and Function Arithmetic

This 3-paragraph document provides an overview and agenda for a lecture on function notation and arithmetic. It begins with a review of the previous lecture's topics on graphing equations and introducing functions. The current lecture topics are then outlined as function notation, input and output of functions, domain and range, and function arithmetic. Examples of function notation and the relationship between input and output are also briefly described. The document concludes with noting there will be exercises on function arithmetic.

Review of last lecture

• Graphs of equations
• X and y- intercepts
• Symmetry of graphs
• Introduction to Function
• Domain and range of a Function (graphically)
• Domain and range of a Function (mathematically)
Topics to be covered

• Function notation
• Input and output of a function
• Domain and range
• Function Arithmetic
Function Notation:
Earlier we described function as a special kind of relation. One in which
x-coordinate is matched with only one y-coordinate.

Input and Output of a Function:

The domain of a function is called the input of a function and the range is
called the output of the function.
Since the output (y-coordinate) is completely determined by the input
(x-coordinate), we write y=f(x).
