Practice 1.1: What’s More!

Directions: Answer the following questions. Write your answer below each questions.
1. What is the difference between a patrilineal descent and a matrilineal descent?

Patrilineal descent is connected to the father’s side; family, culture, surname and etc.
while matrilineal is connected to the mother’s side.

2. What type of kinship system do Filipinos have? Explain.

Here in the Philippines there are different culture and religion that affects our beliefs in
our society. Majority of the Filipino believe in monogamy where an individual only
have one partner and having another is considered as sin. Every generation is changing
and today divorce and annulment is getting legalise making an individual to have
another marriage but in the Philippines divorce and annulment isn’t permitted making
other partner to have another partner that can be part of polygamy. Christians believe
that we are only meant for a single person but Muslims here in the Philippines are
allowed to have more than one wife or Polygyny. Philippines have different beliefs and
kinship but still we can love each other blood related or not and treat each other like a
family.
