Euthanasia: Arguments Against Legalization

Euthanasia is the practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve pain or suffering. While euthanasia is legal in a few countries, most countries have banned the practice. The document argues against legalizing euthanasia, noting that statistics in some countries where it is legal show higher suicide rates, and that terminally ill patients may choose euthanasia due to feelings of guilt rather than physical suffering. The document also states that alternatives to euthanasia, such as effective pain relief, are available.

Euthanasia

Hello, dear judge, spectators and our opponents. My name is Nini and today I will do my best to
show you some arguments against the topic, that euthanasia should not be legal.
Let me start by telling you the definition of this word. Euthanasia is the practice of intentionally
ending a life to relieve a pain or suffering.
Different countries have different euthanasia laws. It’s legal in only a handful of countries, but it’s
illegal in the most of the countries.

As our opponents said euthanasia is legal in developed countries, but let me show you its statistics.
In Switzerland, which is number 2 on developed countries list, euthanasia is illegal, but physician
assisted suicide is legal and required age is not specified, required diagnosis isn’t specified and
symptoms state isn’t specified. To make this clear, I will say that little child can go to the hospital
with unsophisticated illness, which for the child can be “too painful” and decide that can’t take this
anymore and parents will let him die, just in order to not experience simple illness. If you look at
the statistics, you will see that in some countries required age, symptoms or diagnosis aren’t
specified. And the people can just go to the hospital. ask for euthanasia and just make themselves
believe that it wasn’t suicide. Also let me show you suicide statistics in some countries. Belgium,
Canada, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland are in the first 50 countries. It shows that most
of their citizens are inclinable to suicide.
Right to live is priority in Georgia, so its legislation punishes the person who does and participates
in euthanasia.
We all say, that murder is something really bad and is not allowed. So how is killing a person a
good thing?First of all, it is a murder. The word ‘’euthanasia” comes from two greek words and
means ‘’good death”. Proponents of this topic believe it is everyone’s right to die at a time of their
own choosing. We say that euthanasia cannot be matter of self-determination and personal beliefs.
Most of the people consider euthanasia the equivalent of murder, which is against the law
everywhere, where society respects human life.
The problem that will always exist with euthanasia is that terminally ill patients may choose to die
through feelings or guilt. They may feel guilty about the burden that they are putting on their own
families and choose to die for this reason alone.
Also alternatives, such as cessation of active treatment, combined with the use of affective pain
relief are available.
