The International Center for Agriculture Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), is 1 of the 15
members of the CGIAR. Its a non profit agricultural research institute which helps in improving
the livelihood of the poor across the world’s dry and arid areas. It is temporarily headquartered in
Beirut, Lebanon. The research consists of climate change adaptation, integrated crop-livestock
management, crop improvement, water and land management.
Its intervention Include
● Water Harvesting : Water Saving irrigation techniques
● Conservation Agriculture: to help reduce production cost and increase yield
● Diversification of Production System: To Include high value horticulture crops
● Empowerment of Rural Women: Training and support program for alternate livelihood
and value added products
Why does the institution exist?
It is to be noted that 41% of the world's Land consists of dry area and it is also a home to one
thyroid of the world population. Approximately 15% of the population lives in chronic poverty
especially in the marginal rainfed areas. The dry areas are further challenged by frequent
droughts, Climate variability, land degradation and rapid growth of population. ICDRA works
closely with the government ministries and agriculture research institutes to overcome the
emerging challenges. The ICDRA gene Bank currently holds over 135,000 accessions from over
110 countries: traditional varieties, improved germplasm, and a unique set of wild crop relatives
There are various initiatives that are taken up by ICDRA
Social Stabilization Through Comprehensive Agricultural Support for Refugee Host
Communities,’ for the lebanese farmers
Under this the problem that was tackled was the increasing demand of the irrigation water
followed by the worsening impact of climate change. For the rainfed irrigation system it signed
an agreement with the lebanese farmers and provided them improved variety of wheat, chickpea,
barley and faba beans. They also conducted workshops to introduce the farmers to improved
farming techniques which included land preparation for seedbeds, Planting seeds at appropriate
distance and depth, appropriate use of the fertilizers and monitoring the plant health and so on.
Overall the initiative helped the lebanese farmers upscale their farming skills and mitigate the
risk of social instability and low rainfall.
ICDRA had also setted the Food Legume Research Platform(FLRP) at Amlaha, Sehore in
Madhya Pradesh with its satellite hubs in Rajasthan and west Bengal. The hub in Rajasthan will
focus on natural resource management and one in West bengal will research in pulses.
The Establishment of FLRP has helped India to get the best of Internal Science in meeting the
food security challenges and will also attract further research and development
Overall the ICDRA have helped in improving the productivity of dryland agriculture in North
Africa , West Asia and Central Asia. The Breeding programme of ICDRA has helped in the
improvement of cool season food and forage legumes. Using its rich resources and collaborating
with various research institutes it has developed a new grass pea line which have an increased
yield, adaptability and nutritional value for human consumption and animal feed
