PAGA (Public Address & General Alarm)

The Phontech 1700 PAGA is designed to meet the tough requirements for PAGA systems to
the oil and gas - and other industrial applications, both offshore and onshore. The system will
distribute messages and alarms with special focus on ease of operation and safety, speech
intelligibility, reliability and fault tolerance. In addition, the system has built in self test and
monitoring functions for easy and cost efficient maintenance.

Based on plant incidents, the 1700 PAGA is designed to provide zone area witching and
access priority of live voice inputs and automatically generated alarm inputs. Distribution of
prerecorded messages and speech storage and replay are also implemented.

International Shore Connection


The international shore connection is a universal
hose connection that is to be provided on all
ships as per the IMO SOLAS requirement. The
purpose of the International Shore Coupling is to
keep a standby hose attachment to get a
connection from shore or from other ships for
shipboard firefighting, in case there is a total
failure of pumps onboard.

The international shore coupling SOLAS


requirement under Chapter II-2, regulation 19
says; ships above 500 tons gross tonnage and
upwards must have at least one international
shore connection.

Fire Fighter’s Outfit


Fire fighter’s outfit is used to fight a fire on the
ship made up of fire retardant material of
approved type. For a cargo ship at least 2 outfits
and for passenger ship at least 4 outfits must be
present onboard.

Immersion Suit
An immersion suit, or survival suit (or more
specifically an immersion survival suit) is a
special type of waterproof dry suit that protects
the wearer from hypothermia from immersion in
cold water, after abandoning a sinking or
capsized vessel, especially in the open ocean.
They usually have built-on feet (boots), and a
hood, and either built-on gloves or watertight
wrist seals.

SCBA ( Self – Contained Breathing Apparatus)


A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) sometimes
referred to as a compressed air breathing apparatus (CABA),
or simply breathing apparatus (BA), is a device worn by
rescue workers, firefighters, and others to provide breathable
air in an immediately dangerous to life or health atmosphere
(IDLH).

An SCBA typically has three main components: a high-


pressure tank (e.g., 2,216 to 5,500 psi (15,280 to 37,920 kPa),
about 150 to 374 atmospheres), a pressure regulator, and an
inhalation connection (mouthpiece, mouth mask or face
mask), connected together and mounted to a carrying frame.

EEBD ( Emergency Escape Breathing Device)


An Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD) is life
saving appliance which is used for escaping an area with
hazardous conditions such as fire, smoke, poisonous gases
etc. As the name mentions, it is used for quick escape from
a situation wherein the individual has to swiftly vacate his
immediate surroundings, i.e., it is a self-contained
compressed air apparatus for escape from a contaminated
environment.
The accommodation area mandates the carriage of at least
two EEBDs whereas the engine room carriage depends on
the layout along with the number of personnel in the space,
both complying with amendments of chapter -3 of Fire
system safety code (FSSC). It is important to understand the
construction and working of EEBD before buying one.

Fire Extinguisher
A fire extinguisher is an active fire protection device
used to extinguish or control small fires, often in
emergency situations. It is not intended for use on an
out-of-control fire, such as one which has reached the
ceiling, endangers the user (i.e., no escape route,
smoke, explosion hazard, etc.), or otherwise requires
the expertise of a fire department.
