Online Semester at S.P.I.

Introduction:
Due to Coronavirus (Covid -19) pandemic most of the colleges in India were shut down and
circumstances forced colleges to adopt online mode to complete the college semester. SPIT
also adopted online mode to conduct lectures and exams. To teach engineering courses
digitally without being physically present in college was a tough job for all the faculty
members of the college. The report will contain the problems faced by staff and students and
further measures need to be taken to make the online learning more efficient if there will be
a need of conducting next semester in online mode.

Body:
As the semester was being completed online many problems are faced by the teachers and
students:
1. Students having low internet connectivity faced many problems during attending the
online lectures.
2. Due to extra lectures many students felt the stress.
3. Some of the students having low internet connectivity also faced the problems of the
regular attendance.
4. Online teaching was less effective than face-to-face interaction.
5. Due to extra lectures many students felt the stress. Some of the students having low
internet connectivity also faced the problems of the regular attendance.

As semester was conducted in online mode student were able to access class and attend
lectures any restriction on place where they are but it also needed a good connectivity to the
internet connection. Low connectivity affected how quickly they could connect and
participate in class. There was less interaction between teachers and students due to which
teachers also faced many problems as faculty was habitual of teaching in a physical classroom.
It was tough to conduct the lectures in online mode. Students felt much exhausted as the
content that could be taught in one physical classroom that that required more online
lectures for completion which lead increment in the extra lectures due to which students lost
their interest in the respective subject.
Conclusion:
Many things needed to be improved in the online method. The learning and teaching were
less effective than physical classroom.
Many problems were faced by both faculty and students. Effective solutions to the problems
with which both faculty and students are comfortable are needed.

Recommendations:
The scheme of the semester end examinations must be changed so that it would be easy for
both students and the faculties to have a comfortable examination. Taking feedback of every
single student will help to make changes that students often face. Also, Google meet issue
must be solved by purchasing other packages or finding its alternatives if needed. Also,
students’ demands which are appropriate and reasonable must be taken care of and resolved.

Summary:
College must provide official assurance regarding attendance for the students having low
internet connectivity in their area. Due to end of free trial of, issue regarding the google meet
allowing only 100 participants in the meeting as no streaming option is available is needed to
be solved. There should be no extra lectures or labs on weekends. The slot must be free for
the students for self-study. The feedbacks regarding the labs, lectures and exams must be
taken monthly and they should be considered by the faculty. Solutions comfortable for
teachers and students must be provided by the college.
