Reaction / Reflection to the journey of SJCB in the University Colleges

Basketball League

Our school is one of the participants in playing basketball in the University Colleges
Basketball League and were so proud of it. Playing there require much more
preparation because it is a big game for different universities and colleges, preparation
not just in physical aspect that can be seen from their skills during their practice and
actual play but also preparations in their emotion, psychological and mental health
aspect, also for their social development. This is all important to be holistic ready in
all aspect before the game, because failing in preparing as holistic can affect their
whole play as a team.

In terms of physical aspect this is what I can say, they are conditioned enough to play
because it can be already seen by their hard works during practice and the actual play,
the technique that they used as a result of their training, this is the mobility of the
body of the players, the strength and endurance that they show as their best skills.
This strength is what they can used to move and play well and I can say they gave all
their strengths for their game to be worth it, this is by adding their all effort
throughout the game. Emotional aspect is also important as physical aspect because it
is also the base and foundation of the energy and enthusiasm they show. Although
emotion is hard to control especially in a different kind of situation especially when
the one factor affecting it, is the crowd. It cannot be achieved without physical,
mental and spiritual aspect that can help coping with emotion. As a reaction I can say
that the coaches and athletes already remind themselves that winning is measured by
how well they apply all their effort during the game and I can see to their emotions
that whether they win or loss they are emotionally ready for it because athlete or
player is never a loser if he/she gives maximum effort. For mental aspect,
psychological factors which must be considered for peak performance in sports
include; personal factors, motivational factors and mental factors. This could be done
by developing the strategies which will prepare the athlete to enter the competition
with the “proper mindset”. I observed their stress management techniques, coping
strategies that results to concentration on the task that they do and playing as a one
team and shifting out other distractions, sufficient concentration to exclude external
variables (e.g. crowd) that may be negatively affect performance. Also one purpose of
games is for social development. Especially in basketball where there are certain
numbers of players you can interact with. Making friends after the game, making
personal contact and having exposure to the crowd. This social development can also
help the players boost their confidence and be active in their society and personal life.
