INTRODUCTION
  The Grammar Translation Metho d is an old method which was originally used
   to teach dead languages which explains why it focuses mainly on the written form at
   the expense of the oral form. It was very popular during the 18th and 19th century to
                   learning classical literature of the Greeks and Romans.
      The Grammar Translation Metho d as its name suggests, relied heavily on
 Teaching grammar and practicing translation as its main teaching and lae rning
 activitise , The major focus of this method ten ded to be on reading and writing,
    with relatively little attention paid to speaking and listening. Vocabulra y was
  typically tau ght in lists, and a high priority given to accuracy, and the ability to
  construct correct sentences ,and the consideration of what students might do to
    promote their own learning had little or no place in grammar-translation
 the     ory, which tended to assume tha t, if students simply followed the metho d,
                         learning would res ult as a matter of course.
   What are the goals of GTM?
There are two main goals to grammar-translation classes.
One is to develop students’ reading ability to a level where
they can read literature in the target language. The other is
to develop students’ general mental discipline. The users of
foreign language wanted simply to note things of their
interest in the literature of foreign languages. Therefore,
this
method focuses on reading and writing.
 What are the techniques of GTM?
Grammar-translation classes are usually conducted in the students’
native language. Grammar rules are learned deductively; students
learn grammar rules by rote, and then practice the rules by doing
grammar drills and translating sentences to and from the target
language. More attention is paid to the form of the sentences being
translated than to their content. When students reach more
advanced levels of achievement, they may translate entire texts from
the target language. Tests often consist of the translation of classical
texts.
     Advantages
     the Grammar Translation Method is still in use in some
     classrooms during the decades of the 20th century. Maybe,
     it’s because it bears some advantages. Here some of them:
● Translation is the easiest and shortest way of explaining
       meaning of words and phrases.
 ● Learners have no difficulties to understand the lesson as it
       is carried out in the mother tongue.
    ●   An effective way for application of grammar and sentence
       structure.
Disadvantages
Here is some obvious disadvantages of this method:
●   Students lacked an active role in the classroom.
●   Very little attention is paid to communication.
●   Very little attention is paid to content.
●   Translation is sometimes misleading.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, The GTM has produced generations of students
who can master the grammar of the target language yet can
not engage in simple conversations. However, combining the
principles of the GTM with the Communicative Approach may
well be the perfect combination for many language learners.
They will learn to communicate in the target language and
also acquire a sound and accurate basis in the grammar of the
target language.
