OUR MOTIVATION AND
PERSONAL GAIN
People volunteer for a range of different reasons. Some of
these reasons are: making a difference to the community
they live in, a chance to make new friends, and building and
strengthening new and existing social networks. For some, it
is about gaining news skills, knowledge and experience or
sharing and developing existing skills and knowledge,
benefiting members of the public.
Although there are many reasons that motivated us, here are
the reasons that I believe are most important in encouraging
us in completing this project.
1 – wanting to give something back
We all had a common goal, that is to help others and give
something back to the society. As we were brainstorming on
what we need to do, we came across an idea that was close
to our hearts. Our idea was to give something back to society
in a way that everyone’s happy, and what better way is there
than to provide something everyone loves, food.
2 – personal development
At first it was just another project, but as we got more
involved we realized that the various skills and experiences
we experienced can be applied in our own lives. Problem
solving, being creative, taking initiative, teamwork, active
listening, negotiating and managing our time. All these are
crucial life skills that equip people to work through the
various situations and challenges we handle daily.
This project gave us a confidence boost. We are living in an
era where life is extremely busy, so taking time out from busy
schedules in volunteering can give you something different to
be a part of, a new focus, an opportunity to meet new
people, and gain new skills. From my personal perspective all
of this can provide a new lease of life, a new spring in your
step.
Initially, it was us who were supposed to give them a ray of
hope, we felt that we were making a real difference to
someone’s life and it’s not often we get the chance to do that
but ironically it was the children who gave hope to us, by
showing us their will to live, we realised that we need to
change. So, we’re really thankful to complete this project.
PROJECT EXECUTION
As we took on this project, we had come across many hurdles
whether it was allotting some free time in our busy schedule
or pooling in resources for the success of this project. But the
biggest hurdle of them all was to select a place that we
thought would be the most impactful in helping our society.
So, we had decided to take upon the responsibility to feed a
nearby orphanage rather than other communities as it is our
duty to encourage the growth and development of our
country’ youth.
So, On the 24th of October, we had embarked on a journey
with a common goal in mind, a goal which not only satisfies
us but also the children in the orphanage. Seeing them have
fun & play around in such difficult conditions, it made us
realise that we are not only taking everything in our life for
granted but also misusing its perks. Providing them food and
chatting with them really showed how fortunate we are and
was a truly emotional experience.
As they say, all good things come to an end, with that, we
had concluded our project on the night of the 24th of October
and bid farewell to the wonderful kids at the orphanage.
