A/ Introduction to Applied Linguistics:
It was originated 40 years ago in the United states.
Applied linguistics solves a lot of problems related to the
application of language.
It is mainly interested in language problems (use, learning, and
teaching).
It is a branch of linguistics which is concerned with practical
applications of language studies with a particular emphasis on
the communicative function of language and including such
professional practice. i.e it compares the languages' usage and
seeks similarities and differences providing solutions to any
problems that may arise.
Applied linguistics answer questions such as:
1- How can we teach language better?
2- What type of individual difference do we have in language
learning?
3- What are the social influences that affect language learning?
4- How can we write a valid language examination?
5-How can we best advise the ministry of education officials,
curriculum planners and other stakeholders in education?
1-Teachers and academics must determine which
resources, training, practice methods, and interactive
techniques best solve the difficulties related to teaching
someone a language with which they are not familiar.
Using research in the fields of teaching, sociology, an
English grammar, experts attempt to create temporary-
to-permanent solutions to these issues. All of these
disciplines are tied to applied linguistics.
2- Learning more about the learners' individual
differences help omit any issues in language learning.
Applied linguistics sheds light on these differences
while learning a second language (since that was the aim
in the past) or even a foreign language.
3-Three types of social structures, which can affect the
acquisition of second or foreign languages:
sociolinguistic setting, specific social factors and
situations factors. Specific social factors that can affect
second or foreign language acquisition include age,
gender, social class, and ethnic identity.
4-Langauge assessment or language testing is a field of
study uner the umrella of applied linguistics. It's main
focus is the assessment of first, second or other language
in the school, college or university context. The
assessment may include listening, speaking, reading and
writing, as well as proficiency (the ability to use the
language) or knowledge (understanding how the
language works theoretically).
5-Being able to track the language learning problems to
the core would help teachers know more about their
students as well as the methods and principles used,
therefore there are no better feedback providers as
teachers who are the closest to learners.
Conclusion:
Applied linguistics main aim is to investigate the
problems that might face the language learning process,
thus, find concrete explanations as well as the best
solutions for them.
