DURIAN

Kublai Millan created a giant durian sculpture for the Davao International Airport using volcanic rock from Mount Apo and carving techniques. The sculpture depicts a durian fruit and the three ethnic groups of Mindanao - the Lumads, Muslims, and migrants. Despite the hardness of the material, Millan carved intricate details that bring the sculpture to life-like proportions through the use of various colors, shapes, textures, and the balanced presentation of its subjects. The work conveys different messages depending on the viewer and allows people to think and find meaning in its imagery.

Subject: The famous Durian and the tri-people of Davao: the Lumads, the Muslims and the

Dayo/Migrants.

Medium: Since Mindanao is rich of volcanic soil from Mt. Apo, Kublai Millan used volcanic rocks in
creating the giant sculpture.

Technique: Kublai Millan used carving as a technique in the making of the Giant Durian Sculpture.

It is said that sculpting is the art of the people, and it is a more powerful art than literature and painting
because it can be touched and felt. When a sculpture is in front of our attention, it is sustained by an
intensified visual engagement. This is what makes its fixed shape comes alive in the viewer’s eyes.

Created by the famous sculptor Kublai Millan, this sculpture found in Davao International Airport named
as "Giant Durian Genesis Lore". Taking a look, the sculpture includes unique materials, new functions
and symbology.

The artist of this sculpture used the shades of golden yellow, white and cream white with perfect
harmony, perfection and precision, to bring out a more eye-catchy aura especially for those who just
arrive in the Davao. Moreover, utilizing the color cream white color as the primary palate of this art
allows for the light to bounce back on the image further enhancing its curves and its edges.

When it comes to the shapes that make up the sculpture, it was incredibly carved just like a real durian
and real people. Everyone who will see it will surely be wowed in view that it was carved together
perfectly despite the hardness of the giant rock and, the different shades of colors used to make the
artwork often flow together to its shape to create a harmonious pattern.

In terms of texture, rock being a hard and rough material used in carving needs a little extra careful,
effort, and patience. As seen in the picture, the smoothness of the surface of the sculpture almost on all
edges inspite of its size, made us conclude that it was really made not just by the creativity of the
sculptor but also by his love and passion because it is not easy to turn a hard, rough, and thick material
into something like the Giant Durian Genesis Lore.

The presentation of balance, the creation of two subjects: the Durian fruit and the tri-people of
Mindanao, within the imagery allows the mind of the onlooker to play with what is provided in the
image. It could be understood that this sculpture is such a powerful tool that could convey different
messages depending on how an artist creates based on the most basic elements of art.

Lastly, the unity between the elements used in the artwork specifically creates the value it has in
sending out the common message of expanding and motivating the development of creative
interpretations from onlookers who would notice the work. He allows the onlookers to think and give
meaning to the work’s worth depending on how they understand the concept of the color combination
used and the texture developed to improve the form’s distinct imagery.
What makes this work exceptional is that its creator intended to reach out to the audience as to how
much they are going to appreciate his work and become a part of it.
