                              PROBLEM BASED LEARNING
                           SIMULATED CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
Good Day everyone! I would like to introduce you the scheme of our Problem – Based Learning.
I hope that you will be able to enhance yourself better as you explore how this works. Enjoy!
HOW DO I START?
Read the case topic very carefully. Look up terms in your e – books if you need to. Imagine
yourself to be the NURSE in the situation.
SITUATIONNAIRE:
You are assigned to a 1 hour postpartum mother on a 3 – 11 shift at the OB ward. The
client comes in at 4 PM due to increased vaginal bleeding. An IVF of plain Lactated Ringer’s
Solution (PLRS) 1L x 8 hrs is infusing well on her right hand. She also has an Indwelling Foley
Catheter (IFC) connected to a urine bag.
WHAT TO DO?
From here, begin completing the case profile of your client from the point of view of the
nurse on duty receiving a new client in the ward. Here are some guide questions for you:
   1. What are your expected physical exam/assessment parameters? How do you go about it?
   2. What are your intake questions for an in-depth history taking?
   3. What are your differential diagnoses? What do you think is happening to the client? What
are the causes of the bleeding?
   4. What are the most important nursing diagnoses for the client? What are your priority
      actions?
   5. What treatments do you expect the health-care providers (HCP) to order? Are there
procedures you might want to suggest or anticipate?
AND WHAT IS NEXT?
   1. You will join me in our Facilitated Discussion (FD) this afternoon. (1:00 PM)
   2. We will walk through your experience and decide on the next step for our client.
   3. Our output will be potential problems that will be used for your Nursing Care Plan
      (NCP).
You will be graded based on the following criteria:
1. Contributes ideas, thoughts that have merit – 12 points
2. Articulate during discussion – 4 points
3. Ability to evoke an academic discourse or discussion – 4 points
4. Evidence of preparation – 4 points
5. Evidence of team work – 4 points
I am excited to see you this afternoon, and discuss our client. You shall be expected to
open your cams and mics throughout the duration of the PBL. Follow house rules for virtual
classes.
