PARTICIPANT QUALIFICATIONS AND KART SPECIFICATIONS
SECTION I -- JURISDICTION AND ADMINISTRATION
RULE 1 SCOPE OF THESE RULES
These rules of competition are the complete package for the 2011 race. All rules
contained herein will be strictly enforced at all times including, but not limited to,
practices, qualifications, and race. Every person or group of persons who undertake to
organize or participate in the Grand Prix shall sign an affidavit deeming that person is
acquainted with these rules and his participation shall constitute his acceptance of them.
In addition, honorable conduct and good sportsmanship of all participants is expected. By
entering the race and signing a hold-harmless form, the participants agree to abide by all
rules set forth in this rules packet. Every person must abide by the laws of the state of
Indiana and the rules of Purdue University.
RULE 2 DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS
Any unsafe or unsportsmanlike behavior or actions as determined by the
representatives of the Safety Committee may result in the disqualification of a driver,
kart, crew, and organization; or in the cancellation of the race. Any ejection from the race
track for any reason will result in a suspension for the next running day. This includes
being suspended for the race itself. Any violations of the University Regulations will be
subject to disciplinary procedures with the Office of the Dean of Students.
RULE 3 JURISDICTION OF THE GOVERNING BODIES
The Safety Committee will have authority to amend any of these rules at any
time. The technical inspectors will have authority to pronounce any engine or kart illegal
under these rules. Any matter not covered in these rules will be left to the discretion of
the Safety Committee. The Race Chairman is the final authority at the track.
RULE 4 TECHNICAL INSPECTION
All karts and supporting equipment must pass technical inspection before
participation in practice, qualifications, or the race. No changes may be made to the karts
supporting equipment after passing technical inspection except: paint or decals for Race
Day or repairs due to an accident. Passing technical inspection does not guarantee
compliance with these rules. A kart may be protested and/or disqualified because of
noncompliance with any rule in this package whether or not it has passed technical
inspection. Kart and driver set-up must not deviate significantly after passing technical
inspection to the point that it produces noncompliance. Karts must always comply with
the rules. An inspection may be performed before entering the track or after an accident
to ensure compliance with the rules. Each kart will be allowed a total of two scheduled
inspection times. If further inspections are required, a $75 fee will be assessed for each
additional inspection; this does not include re-inspection due to an accident. Any
changes made after a passing of technical inspection shall require a re-inspection

Information - Specifications - Procedures 3
and a $15 fee shall be assessed. The Safety Committee has the right to inspect any kart at
anytime for any reason. Refer to Article 1 Rule 4 for tech inspection procedures.
RULE 5 TEAR DOWN INSPECTION
The karts finishing in the first five positions at the end of the race shall submit to
a mandatory engine tear down. Any other impounded karts may be required to submit to
this tear down during the impoundment period. All crews shall be responsible for any
modifications found during tear down. Refusal of the crew chief to disassemble the kart
or engine shall result in immediate disqualification. If a kart should use a different
engine in the race than was used for qualifications, then the qualification engine shall be
brought to the tear down in addition to the race engine. During inspection of the engine,
only one member of the official crew and the driver of the kart being inspected may be
present with the inspector.
RULE 6 PENALTIES
Any person or organization violating these rules will be penalized. Penalties may
include lap penalties, suspension from the day's activities, fines, or disqualification. The
Chief Starter will have the authority to pronounce any penalty. If a penalty is assessed
during the course of the Main Feature or a Sprint Race, the crew chief of the penalized
kart will be notified immediately by the Pit Coordinator. The crew chief then has the
option to have his driver black flagged and inform the driver, or the crew chief can let the
driver continue to race.
RULE 7 CHIEF STARTER
The chief starter is the official starter for the Grand Prix. The chief starter is
responsible for all decisions during the race and is in charge of the race from the drop of
the green flag to the waving of the checkered flag.
RULE 8 PROTESTS
Protests between karts shall be submitted to the Race Chairman in writing
accompanied by a $50 protest fee and shall clearly state the subject or action protested.
The protest fee will be returned if the protest is found to be accurate; otherwise it will be
awarded to the Purdue Grand Prix Foundation. Protests must be filed on protest forms
which will be provided in the Race Fact Packs within one hour of the completion of the
race. A crew wishing to protest concerning a sprint race must submit the protest within
five minutes of the completion of that race. The Race Committee will give adequate
notice to all concerned parties of any hearing of any protest before its decision will be
binding, subject only to appeal as provided herein. Rules cannot be protested, only
appealed.
RULE 9 IMPOUNDMENT
All karts involved in a protest will be impounded until final action of the Safety
Committee.
2011 Purdue Grand Prix Official Rules – 7 October, 2010
Information - Specifications - Procedures 4
RULE 10 SCORING PROTESTS
These protests must be in writing on the proper form, and specify exactly what the
protest is. Also, they must be turned in no later than one hour after the posting of the
official results, which will be at 12:00 the Monday after the race. Any protest must be
accompanied by a $50 fee, which will be refunded if the protest is upheld, and received
by Grand Prix by 1:00pm.
RULE 11 APPEALS
Any competitor may appeal any penalty or decision pronounced upon him under
these rules, but the penalty or decision shall remain in effect until the appeal is heard by
the Safety Committee. Appeals shall be submitted to the Race Chairman in writing
accompanied by a $100 appeal fee within 24 hours of the rendering of the decision and
will include a copy of the original protest and reasons for the appeal. The Safety
Committee may confirm, reduce, or waive the original decision, and the appeal fee will
be returned if the decision is reduced or waived. The decision of the Safety Committee is
final.
RULE 12 RACE LENGTH
The length of the race shall be determined by the Safety Committee and, under
normal conditions, shall be 160 laps.
SECTION II -- REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION
RULE 1 ENTRANCE ELIGIBILITY
A kart may be entered only by an individual student, a group of students, or
housing units in good standing with Purdue University. All students shall be enrolled in
Purdue University carrying a minimum of twelve credit hours offered by Purdue
University. Grad students must be carrying a minimum of nine credits offered by Purdue
University. Students on the cooperative education program are eligible to participate.

No member of the Grand Prix Foundation Senior Board, Junior Board, Junior
Board Assistant, Trackworkers, Safety and Security, or Grand Prix Promoters shall be
permitted to be a member of any kart crew.
RULE 3 DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY
Students are allowed to participate in the Grand Prix Race as a member of a
crew (as defined by Article I, Section II, Rule 8) a maximum of five (5) years starting
with the first year they participate. Participation is defined as being a crew member of
any kart entered in the Grand Prix.
2011 Purdue Grand Prix Official Rules – 7 October, 2010
Information - Specifications - Procedures 5
RULE 4 ROOKIE DRIVERS
All drivers who have not participated in a previous Grand Prix are required to
attend the walk through, and rookie practice. Failure to attend these events will prohibit
the driver from participating in any Grand Prix race activities. If the driver cannot attend
these events then he/she must notify Race Committee prior to the scheduled events.
RULE 5 RELEASES
All race participants shall have a signed hold harmless/release agreement on file
with the Grand Prix Foundation before a pass will be issued to them. Participants under
18 must have the agreement notarized by the signature of a parent or guardian. Only
authorized representatives of the Safety and Security Department will be admitted to the
infield area without a pass. Signing of these releases also indicates a participant
understands and agrees to abide by all rules in this packet.
RULE 6 PIT PASSES
Pit passes, in the form of a picture I.D. badge, will be issued to the crews upon
passing technical inspection. All drivers and crew members must have pit passes and
their Purdue I.D. readily available to any Grand Prix official. Pit passes are not valid
outside of the pit area. Crews must sign up for picture time the day the kart is entered.
The I.D. badges will be provided at no charge if the entire crew has their picture taken
together. A fee of $5 will be assessed for each badge if the crew does not attend the
photographing session together. A lost pit pass will require a $15 replacement fee.
RULE 7 NON-MEMBERS IN THE PITS
If any person is in the pits who is not an official member of a crew, and that crew
is aware of his presence, that kart and crew will be disqualified from further participation
in Grand Prix for that year. The race chairman, pit coordinator, and safety committee
shall have complete discretion.
RULE 8 CREW SIZE
A crew is to consist of a driver, crew chief, track-worker and four crew
members. The maximum size of any kart crew, including driver, crew chief, track-
worker and crew members shall be limited to seven persons. No person may be a
member of more than one crew. A track-worker must be present and able to work
every practice that their team participates in. If no track-worker is provided a member
of the crew will act as the track-worker for that day.
RULE 10 ROLE OF THE CREW CHIEF
The crew chief is the official spokesman of the crew. No one other than the crew
chief shall handle a situation with the safety officials or the race committee.
He is responsible for all actions which these rules may require him to do, including
securing written approval for material substitutions, and innovative designs and signing
the crew score sheet within the allotted time of one hour following the end of the race.
RULE 11 CREW CHANGES
The roster of crew members may be changed by the crew chief at the Grand Prix
office only. All crew changes must be made on the Official Crew Change Form, provided
2011 Purdue Grand Prix Official Rules – 7 October, 2010
Information - Specifications - Procedures 6
by the Grand Prix Foundation. After March 3, 2011 no crew changes will be approved.
Only six pit passes will be issued to a kart at any one time. Illegal transfer of passes is
grounds for revocation of that pass. A $15 fee and the crew identification badge of the
retired crew member must accompany each individual crew change after March 3, 2010.
RULE 12 RELIEF DRIVERS
Crew members who are eligible, (according to Article I Section II, Rule 1) may
act as relief drivers for their crew during the race, at the discretion of the race chairman.
The crew chief must inform the pit coordinator when a driver change is made during
practices or during the race. Relief Drivers will be marked with a highly visible “X” on
the back of their helmet.
RULE 13 SPONSORS
Recognizing the high cost associated with fielding an entry and wishing to
encourage the involvement of area businesses in Grand Prix, the Grand Prix Foundation
endorses the recruitment of commercial sponsors for individual entries. Kart crews
interested in recruiting their own sponsors must clear their sponsors through Grand Prix
before entering into any agreement. Any information given to the Grand Prix Foundation
before recruiting a sponsor will be held in confidence. No team can be sponsored by
any organization or business associated with alcohol or tobacco, or things of a
sexual or denigrating nature. This rule includes businesses that are bars, or the bar is
not set apart separately from a family area. The race chairman has final say on any
discrepancies with the rule.
RULE 14 ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Electronic devices are not permitted in the pit area or on the track. If a crew
member, crew chief, or driver is caught using an electronic device in these restricted
areas, this will result in a Black Flag for their respective kart and disqualification for that
day as well as the next running day. The only exception to this will be approved radio
communication with the driver.
SECTION III -- WEIGHT MINIMUM RULE
RULE 1 OFFICIAL WEIGHT LIMIT
Weight for kart and driver to meet: 350 pounds.
RULE 2 ADDITION OF WEIGHT
All non-structural weights added to meet minimum kart/driver weight
requirements must be bolted securely to the kart. Bolts of minimum 5/16" diameter must
be used to secure weights and these bolts must be cotter-keyed. Mounting of weights to
nerf bars is prohibited. No plastic containers holding water or metal pellets are allowed.
Filling the frame structure with metal pellets is also prohibited: if caught filling frame
tubing with metal pellets your kart and team will be disqualified. The safety attachment
point of the weights and the manner in which the weights are attached has to pass the
safety officials inspection. If the attachment of the weights does not pass the officials

Information - Specifications - Procedures 7
inspection, then the kart and crew will not be allowed to participate until all safety areas
concerning the weights are met.
RULE 3 WEIGH IN PROCEDURE
-Each kart and driver will be weighed at tech inspection to give the crew an idea
of how much weight to add.
-On the first day of practice of each week the kart and driver will be able to
weigh in to make sure weight minimums are being met. Weight minimums must be
met for the last week of practice.
-On qualification day the kart and driver will be weighed. If the weight is not met
then the kart will not be allowed into the pits until weight is met.
-After a checkered flag is taken in qualifications the kart and the driver will be
weighed again as part of the inspection procedure after each checkered flag qualification
run. If the kart and driver do not meet the weight minimum, then your qualification run
will not count but it will count as a checkered flag taken.
-On race day, all karts will be inspected as usual as you enter the race. You will
not be forced to be weighed in as you enter the pits but the scales will be available to
check your weight if you need to. At the conclusion of the race, the top 5 karts and
drivers will be weighed before being loaded into the trucks to be taken to technical
inspection. If any of the top five finishers do not meet the weight minimum at the
conclusion of the race, then they will be disqualified and they will lose their finishing
positions.
SECTION IV – SAFETY EQUIPMENT
RULE 1 AVAILABILITY OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT
All safety equipment to be used shall be brought to inspection and shall also be
available for re inspection at any time.
RULE 2 HELMETS
Helmets must be full faced, a minimum of Snell 2005 approved, and not older
than 5 years from manufacturing date. Long hair must be securely fastened beneath
the helmet or jacket. A sticker will be applied to the helmet at technical inspections, in a
position designated by the safety officials, to ensure the same helmet is used during
practices, qualification, and the race.
RULE 3 DRIVER PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
To prevent or minimize abrasions, all drivers shall wear gloves of heavyweight
leather or vinyl material, approved neck brace, full length pant secured at the bottom,
socks, and shoes or boots. Drivers must wear the following: a racing suit that meets or
exceeds the SFI 3.2 AI suit or wear at least one layer of Nomex underwear. If the driver
chooses to use the Nomex underwear it must be FIA approved or contain a tag showing it
contains Nomex fiber. Regulation racing suits are permitted.
2011 Purdue Grand Prix Official Rules – 7 October, 2010
Information - Specifications - Procedures 8
RULE 4 CREW MEMBER CLOTHING
At all times within track area all crew members must wear shirts (that cover entire
shoulder area), shoes, and full length pants (no sweat pants, jeans with holes, polyester or
plastic clothing, or SHORTS). Trackworkers will be required to wear safety glasses while
working on the track.
RULE 5 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Each kart shall provide its own fire extinguisher, which must be brought to
technical inspection, practice, qualifications, and the race. All fire extinguishers must be
Gas Class B Underwriters Laboratory (approved and a minimum of 2 & 1/2 pounds
capacity), which has been inspected within the last nine months, tagged and sealed. No
dry chemical extinguishers will be allowed. All fire extinguishers within the pit area
must display the inspection sticker provided at the technical inspection. Fire
extinguishers must be on hand when the kart is being started. Carbon Dioxide and/or
Halon extinguishers are preferred.
A fine of $5 will be assessed each time any team needs its fire extinguisher
resealed after qualifications.
RULE 6 DRIVER RESTRAINT SYSTEMS
A driver restraint system is required on all karts. A driver restraint system consists
of lap and shoulder belts. All belts must be securely fastened to the main frame or to a
fixed bracket system. No belts or belt supports may be attached to the roll cage, nerf bars,
or bumpers. Commercial restraint system mounting hardware is recommended. U-bolts
are not allowed to attach the seat belts to the frame. The shoulder harness bracket system
shall be designed so that a load applied in any direction will not result in any movement
of the shoulder harness bracket. Shoulder harness straps/belts must be positively retained
to any harness support. For example a metal rod with cotter keys on both end so that
straps do not fall off of shoulders. Mounting brackets should be installed at an angle that
is compatible with the direction of pull on the webbing under full load. A minimum
specification for bolts and washers to attach the driver restraint system hardware is Grade
8. Under no circumstances are bolts inserted through belt webbing acceptable for
mounting. Belt webbing may be required to be replaced if the webbing shows signs of
wear, tear, and age. Belts with webbing inspection date of more than three years may not
be acceptable. SFI rated belts and harnesses are also strongly recommended. Belts that
exceed three year tested date may be sent in to SFI for re-evaluation. Safety belts are
required to have a width of at least three inches (3”). In all cases, documented
instructions from the manufacturer on the proper installation of the driver restraint
systems shall be presented at technical inspection if a significant deviation for these rules
exists. Proper fit is at the discretion of the safety and race officials. See the diagram in
the back of the rule packet for further clarification.
All karts must be equipped with commercially made arm restraints, which do not
allow the drivers arms to extend beyond the roll cage. The arm restraints should be worn
according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. They should also be a different color
than the driver’s suit.

A. ROLL BAR
The roll bar must meet material specification #1. It must be of such a
design to enclose and protect the driver in case of rollover. All cages must be of
at least a four point design and have gussets at each intersection of the roll bar and
the roll cage. Two points must extend in front of the driver to prevent any large
obstacles from coming in contact with driver. Gussets are to be at least the same
thickness as the wall thickness of material specification #1 and at least be two (2)"
long by two (2)" high. The roll bar must be of one (1) piece construction and be a
minimum of eight (8)" wide or have a minimum radius of four (4)" at its highest
point. Gussets may also be required at other areas of structural concern as
determined by the Safety Committee.
B. ROLL CAGE
The roll cage must meet material specification #1. It must be of such a
design so as to enclose and protect the driver in case of rollover. No part of the
driver's body may stick out from the safety cage. There must be a (4)” clearance

must be attached to the main frame. Pictures are provided in the back of the rule
packet for clarification.
C. BUMPERS AND SIDE BARS
Bumpers, side protection bars, and attachments to the frame must meet
material specification #1. Bumpers and sidebars must be six (6)" minimum
effective width as measured from the top of the bumper to the bottom of the
bumper and must be in a vertical line with each other. Bottom bars must be seven
(7)" or less above the ground and top bars must be six (6)" or more above the
bottom bar. Distances shall be measured from the centerlines of the bars. Cage
sidebars must be of a "C" type and surround the main frame in such a manner that
any impact will be transferred to the main frame directly. Side impact bars that
are attached to each other form side to side with a bar that goes across the width
of the frame must be attached to the frame in some manner or at a reaction point
to the frame. Bumpers must be designed so that the bumper of another kart will
not pass through them. Bumpers are to extend on each side of the kart to the
center of the wheels. Bumpers and side bars must not extend beyond a line from
the center of front tire tread to the center of the rear tire tread (with the wheels in
as far as they will go), and must extend to less than four (4)" from the tire unless a
sidewinder type engine mount is used, in which case it must extend to less than
four (4)" from the engine. The bumpers and sidebars must be connected with
metal material to prevent bumper hooking. Bumpers must be attached to the main
frame of the kart. Refer to diagram in back for details. All karts must have these
bars.
D. FOOT AND LEG PROTECTION BARS
Foot and leg protection bars and braces must meet material specification
#1 and be an integral part of the frame, i.e. welded to the sidebars or bumpers.
Leg and foot protection bars shall be attached to the side rails such that one bar
passes over the knees. There must be a minimum radius of 2" over the top of the
knees. The bars must be braced forward to the front bumper by two or more
braces. Adequate protection bars must be provided to prevent another kart from
penetrating a driver's compartment. A guard must prevent the driver's feet from
touching the ground.
E. SAFETY FRAME ATTACHMENT
The safety frame must be bolted and cotter pinned securely to the frame
by at least one (1) point in the front and one (1) point in the rear. A minimum 3/8"
grade 8 bolt will be required. These mounts must be located along the
geometrical center of the kart. In addition, there may be one (1) bracing member
to the main frame on the front and rear. Each side of the kart shall have a brace to
prevent failure in case of collision. No elastic straps or cord will be allowed.
F. CONSTRUCTION OF SAFETY FRAME

The total width of the kart shall be at least thirty (30)" and a maximum of fifty-
three (53)" outside to outside of tire or kart.
RULE 7 TIRES
Tires shall be between 9" and 12.75” outer diameter and of the pneumatic type
only. No tire softener will be allowed in the pits.
RULE 8 WHEELS
Wheel bearings shall be of ground ball or roller type only. Axle nuts shall be
castellated and secured with cotter pins of at least 1/8" in diameter. Clips on rear axle are
acceptable. Safety wire or bolts through the axle are not acceptable. All wheels shall be
of racing quality and void of any defects.
RULE 9 SEAT BACK AND FLOORPAN
The floor pan must meet material specification #2. A stock seat back is acceptable
if it is in good condition. No holes large enough for any part of the driver's body to
inadvertently pass through shall be permitted. The seatback must not exceed a 135-degree
angle from the floor pan.
RULE 10 HEADREST
A headrest system must be provided. PADDING THE SAFETY CAGE ALONE
WILL NOT BE AN ACCEPTABLE HEADREST SYSTEM MEETING THE
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA OF THIS RULE. As a minimum, the headrest system
must keep the head in alignment with the spinal column. The headrest system may be
welded to the safety frame. The headrest system shall have a point of contact for the
helmet. A round point of contact shall be provided. Seating the driver in the kart with
his helmet on will be the method used to assess the headrest during inspection. The back
area of the helmet shall make contact with the center point of the headrest. The headrest
must be a flat surface with a minimum dimension of 4 inches or greater, and must
be padded with rubber, foam, or other shock absorbing materials. Pictures are
provided in the back of the rule packet for clarification.
RULE 11 FUEL TANK
Exchange fuel tanks are mandatory. No other fuel system will be allowed. Fuel
tanks must be completely protected by the safety frame. The fuel tank must be of racing

accessible valve attached to the tank, which positively shuts off fuel flow at the point of
discharge. Fuel tanks must be securely mounted to the nerf bar. The fuel tank bracket
must be welded to the nerf bars. The fuel tank must be mechanically attached in a safe
manner. The firewall (splash shield) must enclose either side, the bottom and the rear of
the fuel tank; the height of the firewall must be at least 3/4" higher than the height of the
fuel tank. All edges of the firewall must be rolled, folded under, or cornered with rubber
or comparable material for maximum safety. The firewall must be bolted to the floor pan
or cage. The fuel tank must be mechanically secured in such a way that if the connector
between the tank and the fuel line is breached the tank will remain in position.
Fuel tanks must incorporate either a check-valve or an approved vent relief cap
into the vent system. This means the fuel fill cap must be positively sealed so the fuel
tank is vented to the atmosphere through the check valve or vent relief cap. The venting
mechanism must be installed in a safe manner as determined by the technical inspectors.
No silicon rubber will be permitted and hose barbs should be silver soldered to the vent
cap. Venting mechanism must not allow free flow of gasoline in the event of a rollover.
Any check valve or vent relief cap not properly functioning will result in immediate
expulsion from the event in which that kart is participating.
RULE 12 EXCHANGEABLE FUEL TANKS
Exchangeable fuel tanks are fuel tanks that can be removed and replaced with an
exact duplicate. Elasticized fasteners will not be allowed to secure fuel tanks. These
tanks must meet Article I Section V, Rule 11. The design and the final product must be
approved by the technical inspectors before being used but technical approval of the tank
in no way indicates approval of the volume. Only one fuel tank will be permitted on a
kart during the race.
RULE 13 FUEL LINES

period and the even numbered karts will be allowed to warm-up during the second 15
min. Period. Any kart participating in the wrong warm-up group will be subject to
penalization. When warm-up is completed, all karts will proceed to the pits to await
further instructions.
RULE 3 DRIVERS
One individual driver can qualify only one kart and must drive that kart. If a
driver different from the qualifying driver drives the kart on Race Day, that kart will be
eliminated from the starting field. If, for some very unusual and unforeseen reason the
qualifying driver is unable to drive the kart on Race Day, the Race Chairman must be
notified and he/she will decide if the reason is acceptable. If acceptable, the kart may be
placed at the back of the starting field.
RULE 4 QUALIFYING PROCEDURES
When the track is open for qualifying, four teams will be brought to pit out. After
a representative from Grand Prix speaks to the four drivers, they will have seven minutes
for qualifying. During these seven minutes the qualifying teams are able to enter and exit
pits as needed.
During each qualify run, time will be kept for every lap via computer. In the
event that the computers fail, that qualifying run will stop and the four teams on the track
will get another seven minute session. At the end of the seven minute session the
computer will stop. Drivers will be allowed to finish the lap that they are on when time is
up. Qualifications will only occur if all teams are able to attempt in one day. In the
event of poor weather on qualification Saturday we will hold qualifications on the next
day, Sunday. In the event of poor weather on Saturday and Sunday, half of the field will

qualify on Monday night of Grand Prix week and the second half of the field will qualify
on Tuesday of Grand Prix week.
RULE 5 EXAMINATION
All karts, which accept their runs, must apply the brakes of the kart and securely
lock both rear tires before reaching the pits. Any kart failing the brake test will be subject
to re inspection. All karts must also submit to a short examination so that a fuel sample
may be taken. Karts are also required to demonstrate that the kill switch of the karts
works at inspections. TEAMS WHO FAIL THE KILL SWITCH INSPECTION
WILL HAVE THEIR QUALIFICATION LAP TIMES REMOVED. These karts
will have to have their kill switch inspected again before sprint races and will be
positioned behind karts that recorded times at qualifications during the sprint races.
Those karts, which take the pole position and the second position, may not re-enter the
pits until they are bumped off by another kart. Any qualifying engine may be subject to
tear down. The top two engines will submit to a mandatory engine tear down
immediately following the first day of qualifications. The top two karts from the sprint
races will be inspected after each sprint race.
RULE 6 NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS
Each team will be allowed one (1) seven (7) minute session for qualification.
RULE 7 OFFICIAL QUALIFYING TIME
The official qualifying time will be the fastest single lap time that the driver posts
during his/her qualifying session. In the case of two karts qualifying with the same time,
the kart which posts that time first will be placed ahead of the other kart.
RULE 8 QUALIFYING POSITIONS
After all teams have had the chance to qualify, the fastest kart and driver will be
awarded the pole. The next fastest twenty-six (26) teams will be in the main event in the
order of their time. The remaining teams that did not make the main event will be split
up into three heat races to take place before the main event on race day. The top two
finishers from each heat race will be added to the end of the starting lineup for the main
event. In order to be qualified for the sprint races the teams must complete one full lap
during their qualifying session.
In the event of poor weather and we are unable to qualify on Saturday or Sunday,
the fastest (13) thirteen karts will be in the inside row of the starting grid that qualify on
Monday. The fastest (13) thirteen karts that qualify on Tuesday will be in the outside
row of the starting grid. The rest of the karts that failed to qualify will be in the sprint
races as stated above.
RULE 9 LEAVING THE PITS
Once a kart has attempted their qualifying run, the kart is free to leave but cannot
reenter the track on that day. The top two karts will be held until the end of the day by
the race committee. Once a kart enters the pits on Race Day it may not leave. Doing so
disqualifies the kart. Karts cannot leave the pits after sprint races even if they do not
make the main event.

all karts are in order, the crews will push them out to the track to the start/finish line.
RULE 2 STARTING OF ENGINES
After the drivers' meeting, drivers will return to their karts and prepare to start
their engines. When the starter gives the signal to start the engines, each crew will have a
total of 60 seconds to get their engines started. After 60 seconds, the starter will signal
the pace kart to move the field out on their pace laps.
RULE 3 NON STARTING KARTS
If your engine fails to start in 30 seconds, the crew must push the kart back to the
pits, to try and start the engine. If the engine is started the driver may rejoin the field in
the last position.
RULE 4 REPOSITIONING
If the kart directly in front of you falls out of line, wait until the starter signals you
to move up into their position. All karts starting on the inside remain on the inside and
all karts starting on the outside stay on the outside. No criss-crossing is allowed.
SECTION VIII -- SCORING PROCEDURES
RULE 1
At the completion of the race, the crew chief must sign their score sheet. If the
crew chief has not signed the score sheet within one hour of the race completion, the
entry will be declared official and binding. If either is in doubt and wishes to protest the
scoring of his kart, he/she must indicate that on the score sheet and to the scoring official.
If the crew chief person has not signed the score sheet, nor filed a protest within one hour
of the race completion, the entry will be disqualified.
RULE 2
In the case of a protest, the backup system run by Grand Prix officials will be the
final authority regarding all questions.
RULE 3
All karts must cross the finish line under the checkered flag (or yellow) flag under
their own mechanical power.
SECTION IX -- RAIN PROCEDURES
2011 Purdue Grand Prix Official Rules – 7 October, 2010

ARTICLE III
DRIVING PRACTICES
SECTION I -- DRIVING
RULE 1
No cutting of corners will be tolerated, unless done to avoid collision.
RULE 2
Any foul driving, unnecessary bumping, crowding, chopping, blocking, or
unsportsmanlike conduct on the track or pits is grounds for penalization or
disqualification.
RULE 3
When two (2) karts enter a turn together, the kart which is behind, whether by an
inch or several feet, must yield to the leading kart and not impair his/her position and
choose a line which may crowd his/her competitor off the track.
RULE 4
All drivers must constantly be aware of the traffic in his/her area and be prepared
to yield to a faster competitor. A kart being passed is obliged to yield at the earliest
chance. Any competitor, which does not yield, will be given the blue passing flag and
must move over immediately.
RULE 5
Any kart, which is driving extremely slowly, such as tuning the engine during
practice, must place highly visible tape to the rear of the kart to warn others approaching
that the kart is moving slowly. A slow kart must also stay out of the fast groove of the
track.
RULE 6
A kart may not improve its position with all four wheels off the track unless the
karts it passes are directly involved in an accident.
RULE 7
All karts must enter and exit the pits at a reasonably slow and safe speed.
RULE 8
No kart should pass another kart under the yellow flag. This is defined as
breaking the plane of the leading kart by the kart wanting to pass.
2011 Purdue Grand Prix Official Rules – 7 October, 2010
Information - Specifications - Procedures 26
SECTION II-- HAND SIGNALS
RULE 1
Drivers must signal by raising one hand so that karts behind them can see if they
are driving out of the ordinary pattern, such as exiting to the pits, yellow flag, accidents,
etc.
RULE 2
Drivers must signal by raising both hands high in the air if their kart has stalled or
spun out; indicating their intention not to make any move until the field passes. Drivers
in stalled or spun out karts must always get out and help push or carry the kart. Drivers
should remain in their kart if it stalls on the track until track workers get the kart safely
off the track. Stalled karts should cross the track only where directed by track workers. If
a kart has spun out but is still running, the driver should signal the track workers with
only one hand to indicate he/she wishes to be pushed back onto the track.
RULE 3
All hand signals should be made in such a manner so as not to confuse officials or
other drivers on the track.
SECTION III -- FLAGS
RULE 1 GREEN FLAG
The green flag signifies the start of the session. The green flag and/or light will be
displayed at the start of the race or practice session and kept visible as long as the track is
clear for racing.
RULE 2 YELLOW FLAG
The yellow flag and/or yellow light will be displayed if the track is partially
blocked for any reason. Drivers should raise one hand, slow down, hold their position,
and be prepared to stop. Passing under the yellow will result in a penalty. You must
remain at a safe speed until you reach the first flag station that is not displaying a yellow
flag.
RULE 3 BLUE FLAG
The blue flag with or without the diagonal yellow stripe will be given to any kart,
which does not yield to an overtaking kart. The kart receiving the flag must
immediately signal, move over, and let the other kart pass.
RULE 4 RED FLAG
When given to an individual kart, the red flag means to stop as quickly and safely
as possible, pull inside the infield, and kill the engine. This means there is something
dangerously wrong with the kart and the driver should stop promptly. When given to the
entire field, the red flag and/or red light means the track is hazardous for racing and all

Information - Specifications - Procedures 27
karts must pull off into the infield as safely and quickly as possible and kill their engine.
Karts cannot be worked on during a red flag. If and when the race is restarted, the karts
will be positioned in order of the last complete lap, except for stoppage due to rain. See
Article II, Section VI, Rule 2.
RULE 5 BLACK FLAG
The black flag means the driver must enter and stop inside their own pit spot
immediately for consultation by a race official.
RULE 6 ROLLED BLACK FLAG
The rolled black flag will be given to any competitor whose driving conduct is
bordering on penalization. This is only a warning and does not require the kart to leave
the track.
RULE 7 WHITE FLAG
The white flag will be given to the leading kart one (1) lap before the end of the
race.
RULE 8 CHECKERED FLAG
The checkered flag signals the end of the race and all competitors should finish
the lap at reduced speed and exit to the pits. After the checkered flag is displayed, the top
five (5) placing karts are allowed to stay in the infield for post-race ceremonies.
RULE 9 QUALIFICATIONS
The above flags have different meanings during qualifications. See Article II,
Section IV for the changes.
RULE 10 AUTHORITY
The flags used at practices and on race day shall have ruling authority over the
lighting system. The green and yellow light zones extend from one light post to another,
not before.
In the event of a circumstance not covered or addressed by the rules in this official
rules packet, the WKA rules will be consulted, at the discretion of the Race
Chairman and the Safety Committee. The Race Chairman and Safety Committee
shall have final authority over the interpretation and enforcement of all rules, stated
or otherwise.

SECTION III – Helmet Information
What are the differences between the SA, M and K standards?
SA Standard was designed for auto racing while M Standard was for
motorcycling and other motorsports. There are three major differences between
them:
1. SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not;
2. SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA
helmets may not be street legal);
3. SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.
4. The K standards are very similar to the SA standards, however the K
standards omit the requirements for flame retardency.
Why replace the helmet every five years?
The five year replacement recommendation is based on a consensus by both the
helmet manufacturers and the Snell Foundation. Glues, resins and other
materials used in helmet production over time can affect liner materials. Hair
oils, body fluids and cosmetics, as well as normal "wear and tear" all contribute to
helmet degradation. Petroleum based products present in cleaners, paints, fuels
and other commonly encountered materials may also degrade materials used in
many helmets possibly degrading performance. Additionally, experience indicates
there will be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets
over a five year period due to advances in materials, designs, production methods
and the standards. Thus, the recommendation for five year helmet replacement is
a judgment call stemming from a prudent safety philosophy.
Where is the Snell label located?
There are two forms of the Snell serialized label. The most common is the
adhesive label, but there is also a cloth type for the M, SA and RS standards. The
adhesive label, or decal is usually affixed somewhere on the inside of the helmet.
If it is not readily visible, check underneath the flaps of the comfort padding. The
cloth type labels a generally sewn onto the chin strap and folded over. If a
thorough search fails to turn up a decal then your helmet is not part of the Snell
certification program and does not have the confidence of the Foundation.
