1. What forms of traditional art can you identify in the videos?
In the video, the form of traditional art that I can identify is the Dreamweaver's
T’nalak weaving. It takes about 20 steps to fully complete the rigorous process of
producing this type of cloth (T’nalak) from abaca fibers. This takes about 4-6 months
for a skilled weaver to finish one panel of cloth.
2. What do these narratives tells us about the character of traditional arts?
These narratives tell us that traditional art reflects various cultural perspectives. It
aims to preserve the traditions of a certain cultural group to passed it to the next
generations. It also expresses one’s rich diverse culture through conveying shared
values and beliefs. These people create their pieces with passion and full of
determination, and that every design has a symbol and has a big story behind it.
3. How are the artists portrayed in the video?
The Dreamweavers are portrayed as unique weavers for they don’t plan out their
patterns in making T’nalak. Instead, their designs for their work were presented by
the spirit of abaca hemp, Fudalu, who appears to bestow upon them the exclusive
talent and creativity in weaving. Personally, I don’t find it strange that their designs
came from what they believed, a spirit. It’s their own belief and I think that’s what
every cultural group in the Philippines, as well as to other places, makes their own
distinctive and interesting characteristic.
4. What specific factors can cause changes in art production?
First, the time, it can cause changes in art production because from time to time,
new developmental processes of arts can affect how a traditional art is done from a
certain group or individual. Second is the influence of other religion such as
Christianity. There are several church missionaries who conducts their mission within
this type of places, where rich cultural tradition has been established. They may as
well affect the group’s rituals and traditions. Lastly, is the modernity. With the on-
going technological advancement and rising of new trends, this could affect the
changes in art production. Today’s generation would likely try new things and may
forget traditional artworks because of the contribution the social media has made
towards promoting new styles and aesthetics. Yet, it’s not that disadvantageous
since it also partakes in informing us about the history of traditional arts, dances,
singing and etc.
