CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of Study
The purpose of the school is to teach their student in order to achieve their goal in

life. The teachers obligation is to check their students if they doing their modules. To decrease

the level of being laziness of students. The internet is a technology that has become an

enormous part of people’s daily lives. Over the last decades, internet connectivity has improved

tremendously and is available everywhere. Empirical studies report that access to information

can influence the academic performance of students. We already know that many researches

said that there are many effects of student learning of using a internet. One of this is that it is

very important to all student because it helps them to browse or search what they dont

understand in their modules. And students' access to internet was found to have a positive

influence on their academic performance. The internet is the key information and

communication technology that led to a worldwide revolutionary change in the information

scenario (Siraj, et al., 2015). The internet is a pool of knowledge and any country that fails to

provide her youth access to the internet is unseating the country from her throne of dignity

among other dignitaries (Olatokun, 2008). It is developed to serve as a platform for various

activities for all age groups in society (Akin-Adaeamola, 2014). The internet is a technology that

has become an enormous part of people’s daily lives. Through its ability to act as a support

medium in different functions for which people use it, the internet was introduced to academic

institutions as a tool to enhance student’s academic experience in the mid-1990s

(Ngoumandjoka, 2012). Over the last decades, internet connectivity has improved tremendously

and is available everywhere such as homes, offices, travels and schools (Ellore et al., 2014).
Despite the scarcity of research evidence on its impact on student learning in social studies

classrooms (see, for example, Shiveley and VanFossen, 2003; Whitworth and Berson, 2002),

the Internet continues to be touted as an important resource for social studies teachers. A

cursory review of recently published articles in three major social studies journals confirms this.

More than a dozen articles focused on Internet use in classrooms appeared in Theory and

Research in Social Education, The Social Studies, and Social Education between January 2003

and September 2004. These articles typically followed a common pattern, describing, for

example, important information sites, use of online primary sources for teaching history, or new

online curriculum models. This formulaic approach in the literature (one the authors are guilty of

themselves) was confirmed by Whitworth and Berson (2002) in their review of computer

technology use in the social studies. While they found that “Internet use and accessing

information on the Web remains the most common use of (computer) technology in the social

studies,” more than two-thirds of the articles they reviewed simply described Internet resources

or Internet-based lessons, or were overviews of technology use (pp. 476-477)

Regarding students who are obviously accepted as passionate users of the

Internet, the use of the Internet is mainly for social and entertainment purposes since the

Internet revolution is not just limited to finding information but also bringing people together.

However, it is very obvious that the Internet provides not only social connection and

entertainment, but also academic and scientific information as well. Thus, it is vitally important to

encourage students to use this invaluable source to get any kind of information they need in

their academic studies because the development of the Internet would be meaningless if it is not

used appropriately in education. Therefore, new digital technologies have been widely involved

in higher education institutions as well as other sections of the education system all over the

world (Park and Biddix, 2008). In addition, Internet use has the potential to improve the quality

of education (Ciglaric et al., 1998; Charp, 2000; Laurillard, 1992). Charp (2000) also stated that

the Internet brought numerous positive changes to teachers and instructors. According to Dryli
& Kinnaman (1996), the Internet enables students to find information as well as allowing them to

think critically and creatively, to become collaborative and cooperative workers and to solve

problems.

Previous studies and research have proved that revolution of the internet has

great influence on accomplishments and behaviors of students and the routine and character of

educators has changed and improved (Giles, 2009). Kelly et al., (2007) characterize this

paradigm shift of change in teacher’s methods as, from student-teacher to teacher-facilitator

framework. The Internet provides incomparable connection to the large population of students,

and having them participate through a rather accustomed channel can prove to be a very

effective method to transfer information and knowledge of different sorts e.g. academic routines,

schedules, and news. It also provides teachers another effective and rather an enjoyable way to

communicate with the students. This new method of communication also enables the educators

to have discussions and get reviews from the students they teach. This development of internet

and its use in education system gives birth to some interesting questions about student-teacher

connections on SNSs and their influence on the student-teacher relationship in practical life and

alternatively the effect of student-teacher relationship on student-teacher connections on SNSs.

The very informal and frank tone of SNS communication can result in many undesirable

outcomes in the student-teacher relationship, that is why in many countries, communication via

social networking sites among students and teachers has prohibited altogether (Spilt et al.,

2012).

Unfortunately, all of these studies were conducted outside the Philippines.

There is no study about the importance of internet use in student learning here in the

Philippines. The purpose of these study is to examine the effect of internet use on academic

performance of Senior High School Students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the effect of internet use on student learning in

Crop Production students of SEPNAS. The following questions were posed in doing this

research:

1. What is the socio demographic profile of the crop students in terms of:

1.1 age,

1.2 sex and

1.3. Residence?

2. What is the average grade of students achieved in subject of crop production?

3. How do internet use help them to answer their modules?

4. Is there a correlation between:

4.1 sociodemographic profile of students and average grade achieved in subject crop

production

4.2 sociodemographic profile of crop students and internet use help them to answer their

modules

4.3 average grade achieved in subject Crop production and the internet use help them to

answer their modules?

Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to determine the effect of internet in student learning in order to

optimize learning of Crop students in SEPNAS in the subject of Agricultural Crop Production.

This study will require asking the Grade 11 and Grade 12 Crop Production students enrolled in

first semester, School Year 2020-2021 to be the respondents. This study will be conducted in

December 2020 at SEPNAS, San Carlos City, Pangasinan. This study will use descriptive-

correlational survey design will the respondents will be chosen using Purposive sampling. The

selected respondents will answer a survey questionnare.

Significance of the Study

This study is will benefit the following persons;

TEACHERS. To determine if the internet will help their students to answer and finish their

modules.

STUDENTS. they will be able to determine which is more effective in learning if face to face or

distance learning.

RESEARCHERS. This study will provide them with additional information on related variables

of present study.

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS. This study will serve as they basis to know who among students

learned more. And provide them with additional information and to planned how to help students

get lower grades.
