Miter Saw Risk Assessment Form

1. The document provides a hazard identification and risk assessment form for a milter saw activity/process. It lists the activity steps and identifies potential hazards including loose clothes/jewelry, dust, the guard, blade, and electricity. 2. It assesses the severity and likelihood of each hazard occurring and calculates a risk rating. It identifies existing controls and additional controls needed to reduce risks. Hazards with medium and high risks would be registered in a significant environmental aspect and hazard register form. 3. The form provides guidance on scoring severity from 1-5, with 1 being no injury and 5 being catastrophic with multiple fatalities. It is used to identify, analyze, and control risks to reduce hazards

Hazard Severity (S):
Rate the hazards severity from 1-5 as per the following situation:

1 = No Injury: Has no effect on health and safety

2 = Minor Injury: Does not significantly reduce system health and safety
3 = Lost time Injury: injury results in lost time (one or more days away from work), seeking medical
help
4 = Major Injury: injury results in permanent disability, serious health effects or property damage
5 = Catastrophic: Results in multiple fatalities and/or loss of the system

5 = Catastrophic: Results in multiple fatalities and/or loss of the system

SAFETY INSTRUCTION

1 Eye and ear protection are required when operating a miter saw

2 Don’t wear gloves, loose clothing, jewelry, or any dangling objects when operating a miter saw

All guards must be in place and operating. If a guard seems slow to return to its normal
3
position or hangs up, adjust it or repair it immediately

4 Unplug or lockout power to the miter saw when making repairs or adjusting blades and guards

5 Hands and fingers must be kept clear of the blade by at least 6 in.

6 Clean the lower guard frequently to help visibility and movement

7 Use only the recommended blade size

8 Regularly check and tighten the blade and the blade-attachment mechanism.
Ensure that the blade and its related washers and fasteners are correctly positioned and
9
secured on the saw’s arbor
To avoid losing control or placing hands in the blade path, hold or clamp all material securely
10
against the fence when cutting.
11 Do not perform operations freehand.

12 Never cut small pieces

13 Long material should be supported at the same height as the saw table.

To avoid contact with a coasting blade, do not reach into the cutting area until the blade
14
comes to a full stop
After completing a cut, release the trigger switch and allow the blade to come to a complete
15 stop, then raise the blade from the workpiece. If the moving blade stays in the cutting area
after the cutting is complete, injury can result from accidental contact.
When using a sliding miter saw, start cutting with the blade closest to you, plunge
16
downward, and then push the blade forward on its sliders as you cut
