THE USE OF “VERB-STORMING KIT” TO TEACH NARRATIVE WRITING TO

PHASE 2 PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS

This research aims to improve teaching practices to assist pupils to

brainstorm on verbs before writing a narrative essay through the use of “Verb-
Storming Kit”. Phase 2 primary school pupils have a tendency to write a narrative
essay without drafting any short ideas before hands (Saavedra, A. D. & Barredo, C.
P., 2020). A major problem that may contribute to this issue is the pupils’ poor pre-
writing and brainstorming skill. In order to write well, pupils must be aided to the
process of generating ideas through pre-writing activities such as brainstorming
(Selvaraj, M. & Abd Aziz, A., 2020). Based on the previous research, Sivagnanam,
S. & Md. Yunos, M., (2020) highlighted that most pupils write with disorganized ideas
due to their lack capability to produce ideas during pre-writing stage. Kaur, P. &
Abdul Rashid, N. M. (2020) also proposed that pupils who write without first
undergoing brainstorming activity will have difficulty to generate their ideas for their
essays. Therefore, in this research, “Verb-Storming Kit” is a very unique tool with
visual and touchable board that can be useful in pre-writing task as it encourages
pupils to brainstorm on suitable verbs before writing a narrative essay. Several
phase 2 primary school pupils should be selected as the research sample. This
research will also apply three gathering methods which are document analysis,
observation and interview. Based on the 21 st century learning approach, “Verb-
Storming Kit” promotes pupils’ participation and hands-on involvement that improve
their pre-writing and brainstorming skill for narrative essays. It also develops pupils’
cognitive skill and self-confident in learning English as a second language. This kit
also facilitates teacher to create student-centred classroom environment. Most
importantly, “Verb-Storming Kit” is always available to be referred by Ministry of
Education as helpful tool that develops pupils’ language proficiency.
