Exercise 1. Reading Comprehension Task

Instructions: Compare and contrast each pair of terms related to Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics as
discussed in this section.

1. Instrumental Good – Ultimate Good

- A ton of thoughts is assigned as the ultimate good. First is the pleasure. The joy on the food
we eat or the sentiments we present. However, despite the fact that delight might be an
extremely decent, it actually doesn't fulfill that this ultimately passes by and after some time
will cause you to need for it over and over. Something else that is believed to be a definitive
decent is abundance. Abundance is the thing that everybody thought they required
particularly the individuals who believe that once they purchase something, they will in the
long run feel cheerful and satisfied. Nonetheless, we have heard numerous cases wherein
even the most extravagant individuals actually die of gloom in light of the fact that despite
the fact that they are rich, they actually can't get what they truly want. This is the reason we
cannot base here a definitive decent. Another is notoriety and honor, which likewise nearly
everybody expects to get these days. Presently that there is such thing as adherents and so
forth, a great many people would need a greater amount of that, so they will continue doing
what puts them on the map. In any case, this is not a definitive decent in light of the fact
that its premise is the view of others. Presently, what is the regular thing about delight,
abundance, and popularity and honor other than being an instrumental decent? It is bliss.
They all needed the sensation of satisfaction and do the things that satisfy them. That is the
reason a definitive decent is cheerful in light of the fact that satisfaction is living great and
progressing nicely. Instrumental good is esteemed as a method for something different and
the Ultimate good is distinction and honor.

2. Pleasure - Happiness
- As per Aristotle, Happiness comprises accomplishing, through the course of an entire
lifetime, all the merchandise — wellbeing, abundance, information, companions, and so on
— that lead to the flawlessness of human instinct and to the improvement of human
existence. This expects us to settle on decisions, some of which might be troublesome.
Frequently the lesser great guarantees prompt delight and are all the more enticing, while
everyone's benefit is difficult and requires a type of penance. For instance, it very well might
be simpler and more agreeable to go through the late evening staring at the TV, however
you realize that you will be in an ideal situation on the off chance that you spend it
investigating for your research paper. Building up a decent character requires a solid
exertion of will to make the best choice, even in troublesome circumstances. Along these
lines, Aristotle takes torment to clarify that this is not indistinguishable from bliss nor is it
fundamentally indistinguishable from what pleasure is. All things considered, joy/torment
are signaling that work accurately in the righteous individual (detestable torments them;
great gives them delight), however that work inadequately in lesser humans (where evil
some of the time gives them joy; great occasionally gives them torment). Happiness is not
pleasure, nor is it a goodness. It is the activity of ethicalness.
3. Virtue – Vice
- The contrast between vice and virtue could be found in the definitions. Bad habit in
straightforward terms implies negative behavior patterns while righteousness implies
beneficial things or great lead. Likewise, there goes a truism, 'what is bad habit today might
be righteousness tomorrow'. There are numerous things in yesteryear that were viewed as
crazy and culpable under the law however the equivalent are ordinary lifestyles starting
today. This implies what is terrible today might be considered as the best tomorrow
regarding propensities and nature. Temperance benefits others while indecencies just
assistance oneself. Nonetheless, goodness does not mean great and a bad habit does not
intend to stay away from something. All things being equal, a decent ought to be looked for.
Indecencies are fine on the off chance that they do not cause hurt, while excellencies, for
example, benevolence can prompt an individual being exploited.
Do whatever is wanted yet to comprehend that activity did imply that the individual
should acknowledge the outcome. An individual who enjoys voracity should manage the
actual impacts. An individual who dares to believe what anybody discloses to them should
acknowledge being stupid.

4. Intellectual Virtue – Moral Virtue

- Aristotle recognizes two sorts of virtue: moral virtue and intellectual virtue Aristotle says
that ethical excellencies are not intrinsic, but rather that they are gained by building up the
propensity for practicing them. Moral virtue: moral excellence has a place with the
unreasonable however cognizant piece of the spirit. It comprises subjecting feelings and
want to reason, for instance, balance. It is irreverent ethicalness and comprises of the
control of wants f joy by reason. Boldness is additionally good prudence. It comprises of the
control of the feeling of dread by reason. Moral ideals are propensities for conscious
decision for the acknowledgment of the great. They are the mean between two boundaries.
On the other hand, Intellectual Virtue: This sort of righteousness has a place with the
judicious self. It incorporates both hypothetical and commonsense information. Scholarly
righteousness infers information or insight just as a propensity. It is not sufficient that man
gains information. That is just the hypothetical part. The useful comprises of applying the
information in functional life. The information does not comprise ideals, information is an
imperative component of goodness. Prudence relies on the information on the great and a
propensity for willing the great.

5. Science Technology – The Good Life

- Science and Technology are indeed there. Great life and ethicalness are what our identity is
and how we associate with science/innovation (as parts of our current circumstance), and
one another. Science and Technology are apparatuses that can assist us with accomplishing
a decent life, particularly if the specialists of science and innovation have/practice great
ideals. Science or innovation might be drilled idealistically, yet the items do not have the
personality of righteousness. Along these lines, any item or thought can be utilized by
people for positive or negative. That does not make the item or thought intrinsically terrible.
For instance, a portion of the examination behind selective breeding has caused us toward
numerous assistive and therapeutic advancements just as a superior comprehension of our
basic legacy and changeability in it. It isn't the science or the innovation, it is you and I.
