3.2 Career paths
1.12 Identify the scope of opportunities and the requirements for education training, certification,
licensure, and experience
As I think about my next couple of years, I have a lot of decisions to make. My end goal is to be an
elementary teacher. Some of the questions I have regarding the education requirements are: What education training
do I need? What certification do I need?. What licensure do I need and have? What experience do I need and have?
To answer some of these questions I created a career path and displayed it in a fluid chart (Evidence 3.2.1).
In high school, I have already taken the ACT. I took it last spring and I plan on taking it again on October
24th, 2020 before I graduate. To prepare for college and become a teacher, I have taken Spanish 1 and 2, and I’m
currently in Teacher Academy. Some of the fun things I do outside of high school are play softball for Olentangy
Orange and teach at New Life Church. I have played softball for six years. I play third base and I am also a catcher.
My softball team has shown and helped me build friendships, leadership skills, and commitment skills. At church, I
am a preschool and elementary Sunday school teacher. I also help out in the special needs room at my high school.
I am very grateful to be a part of a lot of the teacher academy because not everyone gets in. There is a rigorous
application process. This class is going to prepare me for becoming a teacher. In teacher academy, you learn the
basic skills and the fundamental needs and requirements of becoming a teacher. (Evidence 3.2.2)
In my junior year of high school, my friends and I got the chance to tour the University of Cincinnati. I
plan on visiting colleges throughout this year: Kent State, Otterbein University, Ohio State University, and Capital
University. I plan on going to a four-year university and studying education. All of the colleges on my list have good
education programs. Out of all of the colleges on my list, my dream school is to attend Ohio State University where
I plan on majoring in Early Childhood Education. The requirements for The Ohio State University are a college
essay, a grade point average of 3.76, and an ACT score of 27-32 or higher. (Evidence 3.2.3). I want to go to Ohio
State because my dad works there. Their education program is phenomenal. It's a gorgeous campus, and I am
familiar with the campus. The requirements for Otterbein are a college essay, a grade point average of 3.5, and an
ACT score of 21-27 or higher. (Evidence 3.2.4) I like how this campus is very close to home. I have been to a few
school football games and their education program is very good, as well. Lastly, in regards to Capital University, I
love the campus. My sister goes there and is in the education program. I have seen the campus a couple of times,
and I love what I have seen. The requirements for Capital University are a grade point average of 3.44 and an ACT
score of 21-26 or higher. (Evidence 3.2.5 ) While in college, I plan on student teaching in a school around the
Columbus area to get a feel of what it is like to be in the classroom. After learning about the entrance requirements,
the teaching program, and the licensure required for teaching, I think all of the schools are a good fit for my
personality. (Evidence 3.2.2). My personality matches those of successful teachers, for example, I have a respectful
attitude, patience, a strong work ethic, flexibility, and I am a very friendly person. The requirements in Ohio to get a
teaching license are that you have to have a Bachelor’s Degree and approved program of teaching preparation, pass
the examination prescribed by the State Board of Education, and 12 semester hours of reading coursework for Early
Childhood Education (Evidence 3.2.6)
After I go to a 4-year college, I hope I can obtain my Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. My
education goal is to start in a suburban setting similar to Worthington Schools, Westerville Schools, or Big Walnut
Schools. My overall career goal is to be a teacher within the Olentangy Local School District. I would like to have
my own classroom as a second-grade teacher. I would eventually like to earn my Master’s Degree in Education.
(Evidence 3.2.6) , (Evidence 3.2.2).
In conclusion, I know there are other career opportunities such as administration, guidance, or curriculum
specialist that require additional certification, but at this point teaching elementary is my desire. I love helping and
caring for people. I love teaching and being around kids. I have a strong belief that I would be a great teacher as I am
developing a lot of teaching skills that I have learned in Teacher Academy, from my own teachers and coaches, and
teaching kids at my church. I believe I have many traits similar to those successful teachers.
