300 H&H Magnum
Based on the .375 H&H belted case,
.300 H&H Magnum
the “Super .30,” as Holland & Holland
called it, was introduced in 1920, but it
wasn’t chambered in American
sporting rifles until Winchester offered
it in the Model 70 in 1937, two years
after it won the famed Wimbledon
1,000-yard title in 1935.
By modern standards, the .300 H&H
isn’t really a “magnum” but offered
enough in terms of increased velocity
over other .30-caliber cartridges of the
period to earn a well-earned reputation
in the field against thin-skinned game around the world.
Compared to present-day .30-caliber magnums, the almost ancient .300
H&H falls about 100 to 200 fps short in head-to-head velocity
comparisons, but the advent of the Barnes X-Bullet along with a broad
selection of modern canister powders allows the old .30 to compete on
the same field with any of the so-called improved belted magnums.
