The movie ‘Ded na si Lolo’ is an independent film with a genre of comedy
directed by Soxie Topacio. The movie itself is a portrayal of a Filipino family, how
they deal with lost of a family member. The director presented what kind of culture
do Filipinos have. It showed how Filipinos are very family oriented, religious,
respectful, and of course the highlight of this film is how we are very superstitious.
In watching this film, it honestly feels nostalgic watching this again, since I’ve
already watched it when I was a child. In going back to it’s different scenes again I’ve
realized things that I missed back then. First, I’ve realized in this movie how Filipinos
value their family. In the movie, there are four siblings: Isidro, Dolores, Mameng,
Charing, and Joonee. These siblings showed how they value their Family despite of
the issues surrounding them. It’s amazing to know that Filipinos have this culture that
whenever there’s a problem in our family the extended family tends to come together.
Despite of the issues surrounding them they were still able to be together for their
late father. Another culture in the movie that was shown is being religious of Filipinos.
Where in the wake of their father there are ladies usually in their middle ages will
pray for the person who died. This shows that in every aspect in our life as well as in
death we always associate our faith. We tend to lean on our faith and believe that
everything will be alright.
The highlight of this movie is the superstitions of Filipinos when there is a
wake. It’s actually funny to watch the scenes where they showed different
superstitions in the movie since I can also relate to it as well. If you will watch the
movie it looks like it’s very chaotic and uncivilized. Like when the casket was trying to
put inside their house. There’s a superstition that family members are not allowed to
carry the casket. Once it’s inside the casket should be positioned in a way that the
feet of the dead is not pointing to the door. It is believed that that will bring bad luck.
At the end of the movie, I thought it’s incredible that this culture and traits are still
intact in the modern days However, I believe that it’s alright to believe in
superstitions as long as it doesn’t really affect you, but it may be wise to also know
the source of the belief and evaluate whether it’s practical at this age and time.
