Lesson 1: Single-Word Nouns Used in Compound Nouns

Discussion:
 Nouns are words used for naming people, things animals, places, and events. In some
instances, another noun is added to, or precedes the main noun to give additional
information or attribute about that noun.

Single-word nouns placed before another noun extend information about

that noun and as such, form what are called attributive nouns. The two nouns
form a compound noun written separately and without any hyphen.

Examples

1. The stone wall protects the main house from the main street.
The underline word is a noun that further explains what kind of wall it is.

2. The ocean waves pounded on the bay during the monsoon rains.
The same applies to this sentence. The noun ocean further defines the type of waves
that pounded on the bay.

Lesson 2: Noun Phrases or Noun Clusters in Sentences

Discussion:
 Nouns are words used for naming people things, animals, places, and events.
 A noun and a word or group of words makes up a noun phrase or a noun cluster. Like any
noun, it has special function in our communicative experiences, whether written or oral
speeches.

 A noun phrase may serve as the subject of a sentence

Note: A sentence is a group of words expressing a complete thought. It has two parts; the
subject and the predicate verb. The subject is the part of the sentence about which something is
being said. The verb tells or asks something about the subject. One of the easiest ways to find a
subject is to find the verb and ask who or what is doing the action or is in that condition. Nouns
or noun substitutes are used as subjects

Example
The diligent students recited in class.

Step 1: Find the verb. The verb is recited.

Step 2: Ask the question. Who recited?
Step 3: State the answer. The diligent students
Noun phrases used as subjects

Examples
1. The hardworking elementary pupil graduated with honors.
2. The bunch of flowers was delivered to the birthday celebrator.
 A noun phrase also functions as predicate nominative when used with a linking verb.
Example

Wind turbines are a renewable source of energy.
 A noun phrase may also serve as direct object in a sentence.

A direct object in a sentence is the receiver of the action of a transitive verb. It answers the
question what or who receives the action.

Example
The teacher gave out printed copies of the stories.
 A noun phrase may take the form of appositive to the subject.

Added explatory words are commonly called Appositives. An appositive is a noun or its
equivalent, often with modifiers, that follows another noun to explain it more fully.
Example
