Understanding the Zhang Fu (Yin and Yang organs) relationship is very important in
this meridian theory in practice and application. The reason for this is not only does
acupuncture assist pain along the meridian and superficial layers of the body, but
meridian have an internal path way that touches upon its related organ.
This internal pathway is not the same as the meridian.
Tai Yin Lungs- (LU): Originates middle burner, connects with Large Intestines,
passes through diaphragm and stomach orifice, and enters the Lung.
Yang Ming Large Intestines (LI): Supraclavicular fossa- connects with lungs and
large intestines.
Taiyang Bladder (BL): 1) from vertex enters the brain. 2) Internal connection with
kidney and bladder at lower back.(BL23).
Jue Yin Pericardium (PC): 1) Chest that connects with Heart outer layer. 2)
Diaphragm with 3 jiaos. 3) lateral branch to PC1.
ShaoYang Triple Burner (TB) 1) from supraclavicular fossa- into chest at Ren 17
connects with Pericardium channel. 2) through diaphragm to abdomen- connects with 3
jiaos.
Du mai- Governor (GV) 1) Perineum to DU16 and brain. 2) Ren 4 (in man) and
uterus in women- genitals cocyx then to Kidney and BL meridians. Sacrum/lumbar
region-body to kidneys. 3) inner canthus with UB mai, down nape and lower back-
enters body with kidney again. 4) Ren 4 takes course of Ren mai through umbilicus- to
heart and then throat (where DU, Ren and Chong meet) cheek to below eye.
Ren Mai- Conception (CV) 1) Ren 3 midline of anterior trunk- passes through
abdomen- chest- throat- w/ chong mai- face lips and below ST1. 2) Ren 4 man or Uterus
in women- Ren 1 perinium- (w/Du and chong) and joins DU thru coccyx and penetrates
spine.

Korean SaAm Acupuncture: 4 Needle technique
Lectures by
Dr. Tae Cheong Choo, L.Ac., O.M.D.,Ph.D
more at VUOM.org
SaAm can be translated two ways. First it means “Alive, and/or Living”, it also
means Person who lives in a stone cave. Which is what a monk does, lives in seclusion,
lives like the wind, and not care to reveal identity.
Virginia just had its first SaAm acupuncture class and it is a fascinating style of
acupuncture that emerged 400 years ago in the Korean Chosun Dynasty. Master SaAm
was a monk physician, and a high priest in the Buddhist sect.
In legend he was thought to have meditated in a cave for many years and was able to
open his “mind’s eye” and saw through the core of acupuncture mystery. His only
surviving clinical record claims that in only 1 treatment, he cured a patient who had
been suffering with the same condition for dozens of years. After his death, his method
remained hidden for 400 years.
It was not until a contemporary scholar and doctor Dr. Hong Kyung Kim resurrected his
system of medicine. The story goes that Dr. Hong Kyung Kim had a small acupuncture
clinic. He tried a few points in a small text on some of the points mentioned by Master
SaAm. He was able to treat a few people and word got around. However, while some
people had great results, others did not. Dr. Hong Kyung Kim closed up his clinic, and
went to the mountain monastery and for 14 years studied the I-Ching (Book of Changes),
The Huang Di Nei Jing (Yellow Emperor Classic on Internal medicine), and the
Buddhist Classics. After that time , Dr. Hong Kyung Kim was able to understand SaAm
method and re-opened his clinic. Our teacher Dr. Choo was a student of Dr. Hong
Kyung Kim back in 1984. Dr. Choo is in demand worldwide to teach this method.
1. Tai Yin divides into hand and foot regions: Tai Yin hand becomes Lung meridian,
while the Tai Yin foot becomes known as the Spleen meridian.
2. Shao Yin divides into the hand and foot regions: Shao Yin hand becomes the Heart
meridian, while the Shao Yin foot becomes the Kidney meridian.
3. Jue Yin divides into the hand and foot regions: Jue Yin hand is the Pericardium
meridian, while the Jue Yin foot becomes the Liver Meridian.
The 3 Yang channels of the body are called the Yang Ming, Tai Yang, and Shao Yang.
These are divided into subcategories of hand and foot and related to the Yang organs of
the body.
1. Yang Ming divides into hand and foot regions: Yang Ming hand is the Large Intestines
meridian, while the yang Ming foot is the Stomach meridian.
2. Tai Yang divides into hand and foot regions: Tai Yang hand is the Small intestines
meridian, while the Tai Yang foot is the Urinary Bladder meridian.
3. Shao Yang divides into hand and foot regions: Shao Yang hand is the Triple Burner
meridian, while the Shao Yang foot is the Gall Bladder meridian.
In the above diagram we can see that the 5 elements, 6 Qi, 8 Bagua trigrams and it
corresponding nature of the 3 Yin and 3 yang meridians. Each has a matching pair that
creates a balance when the patient has a certain circumstance that is affecting their
health.
1. Tai Yin is moist and is balanced by the Yang Ming pairing that is dry.
2. Shao Yin is hot and is balanced by the Tai Yang pairing that is cold.
3. Jue Yin is inward movement of air and is balanced by Shao Yang pairing of outward
movement.
Tai Yin Lungs- (LU): Originates middle burner, connects with Large Intestines,
passes through diaphragm and stomach orifice, and enters the Lung.
Yang Ming Large Intestines (LI): Supraclavicular fossa- connects with lungs and
large intestines.
Yang Ming Stomach (ST): Supraclavicular fossa- diaphragm to stomach connects
with spleen, nipple- umbilicus to lower side abdomen at ST30.
Taiyin Spleen (SP): 1) from abdomen enters stomach/spleen. 2) Diaphragm,
esophagus root of tongue. 3) diaphragm- heart and to HT meridian.
Shaoyin Heart (HT): 1) diaphragm connect to S. intestines, 2) esophagus- to the eye.
3) Lung and Axilla.
Taiyang Small Intestines (SI): 1)suprascapular fossa- heart-esophagus-diaphragm-
stomach-small intes.2)neck-cheek-ear 3)lateral side of nose to inner canthus.
Taiyang Bladder (BL): 1) from vertex enters the brain. 2) Internal connection with
kidney and bladder at lower back.(BL23).
Shaoyin Kidney (KD): 1) Coccyx- internal runner anterior to spine. 2) Branch
connects with UB and Uterus. 3) Branch from Kidney to Liver-through diaphragm to
Lung- esophagus to throat and tongue root. Second branch from lungs to heart and
chest meets up with Pericardium channel.
Jue Yin Pericardium (PC): 1) Chest that connects with Heart outer layer. 2)
Diaphragm with 3 jiaos. 3) lateral branch to PC1.
Mindpath meridianology– mental struggles affect the meridians and Qi flow and
have a effect on the persons harmony and well being.
1. Level 1 is Physical associated with feelings of being overly satisfied having basic
necessities (Tai yin) vs. dissatisfaction (Yang ming). This means basic needs of food,
shelter, money, clothing. Tai Yin and Yang ming will balance the physical.
2. Level 2 is Emotional: having feelings of satisfaction (Shao Yin) vs. dissatisfaction (Tai
Yang) in emotions, romance, aesthetics, sexual passion.
So point combinations are based on the mind of the patient. A example would be a
patient who is restless and worries due to financial problems (Physical) causing
relationship issues (Emotional) and struggles at work (Intellect power struggle).
Some characteristics of SaAm acupuncture:
-Men are needled on the Left side and Women on the right side.
-However: It is only done on one side of the body. Usually on the Healthy side. Ex. pain
on rt. shoulder: needle left side.
-Needling direction tonifies when flowing with direction of meridian and and sedates
against the direction of meridian.
-Rotating the needle clockwise tonifies, and counter clockwise sedates.
-Inserting the needle while patient exhales tonifies, while inhale sedates.
-Closing the hole after needle withdrawal tonifies, while keeping hole open sedates.
-Slow insertion fast withdrawal tonifies, fast insertion, slow withdrawal sedates.

Constitutional Acupuncture
*from Clinic Internship Spring 2017 Virginia University of Oriental Medicine (VUOM)
Dr. Pyo supervisor.
Constitutional acupuncture is not well known in the west but it is taking a hold in our
clinic here at VUOM. From what I have gathered, some unique testing is done to
determine the dominant element of the person and constitution type. There are 4
elements are used in Constitutional acupuncture, a person’s body type has a primary
with a secondary element.
This medicine treats both the primary and secondary constitution types.
Constitutional acupuncture method can be called “34 needle acupuncture” because you
can do both the 5 shu point or 8 extraordinary point sets in the charts for the strongest
treatment.
5 element Shu points and Saam Tonify/Sedate points. Not shown the Saam Heating
and Cooling points.
What I do like about this method is it uses nature and what seems like quantum physics
in its theory. The method is thought to work on all cases the patient is having in regards
to physical issues, their energy level, mental health, and spiritual wellness. A good
patient for this method is one with issues in a lot of places. My teacher calls this method
an art form. It seems very mathematical as well.
The BDORT technique is controversial as western doctors will call it quackery and
pseudo science. The real knowing is testing and playing around with it so you can make
an educated decision. For myself as a formally licensed Massage therapist, there seems
to be some traces of Reiki thought and method in Dr. Yoshiaki Omura’s BDORT method.
The doctor tries to pull them apart using his two middle fingers to feel strength or
weakness. Strong grip and weak grips can be found in the patient. Why is this? what
makes standing in a certain direction or touching certain parts of a picture cause
strength and weakness of trying to keep fingers touching? Earth’s Magnetic energy fields,
and gravitational forces apparently working on the individual. This is indication of what
the patient needs or doesn’t need. BDORT can be done with food, vitamins, herbs, find
allergens… things your body may need or not need. The body will tell you. This is how
the doctor finds which image, element, cardinal direction, etc. is best for patient. Other
testing also indicates clockwise/counter clockwise energy patterns of a patient.
Some of the Images the patient will touch: (not shown: spiral galaxy clockwise and
counter-clock wise)
Lost yet? Sound a bit too mystical or farfetched?
So here is something pretty cool: this “ring technique” works for needling direction. A
assistant to the doctor is used when the doctor places a chop stick or needling tube in
the direction or opposite direction of channel. For Extraordinary points the doctor does
the “ring test” towards the front or back of patient. The reason for this is the Channels
go up or down the body, while the extraordinary energy spirals left and right around the
body. So if the doctor has a hard time pulling the ring apart for instance in the counter
direction for ST36 on right side, then he will use sedation direction on rt. Side and
tonification direction on left side and confirm this with the ring test on left side.
Images related to this system:
Time of day, direction, so much to know. Direction a patient is needled is also changed
based on the direction they were needled last time. Some people are clockwise energy,
others are counterclockwise wise. There is a lot to know at this point as I am still trying
to figure out this method, but am fascinated on the ring testing as it seems to be real and
not fake.
In the future a book will be translated/written by my intern teacher Dr. Pyo, but his
brother who is a Western medical doctor, qigong master, and acupuncturist devised this
method based on the 5 element “shu points” and extraordinary points using theory of
polarity, the universe, nature, and earth.
Basically:
Start Finding the elements:
Easy method
2 perpendicular needle bai hui and 2.5 cm behind bai hui. Lay patient to face north to
open channels.
Determine clock wise (rt. tai yang xue at temple) or counter-clockwise (left tai yang xue
at temple) test for O-ring strongest by pointing middle finger on each side to O-ring test.
Clock wise patient: use rt. arm, and Counter-clockwise, choose left arm.
O-ring test in Sun time is primary element, O-ring test at moon time is secondary
element.
Lung 9 (Tai Yuan) is Earth
Lung 5 (ChiZe) is Air
Heart 7 (Shen Men) is Fire
Heart 9 (Shao Chong)is Water
The primary and secondary have to be yin yang combinations. It cannot be Yang Yang or
Yin Yin example: Tai Yang- Shao Yang is not a correct primary secondary.
Longer Method to find element
Insert 2 perpendicular needles at bai hui and 2.5 cm behind bai hui. Lay patient to face
north to open channels.
Determine clock wise (rt. tai yang xue at temple) or counter-clockwise (left tai yang xue
at temple) test for O-ring strongest by pointing middle finger on each side to O-ring test.
Clock wise patient: use rt. arm, and Counter-clockwise, choose left arm.
Tai Yang (Air type/excess Lung Deficient Liver) will have strong 0-ring at LU5 indicate
excess lung, strong O-ring at Liv.2 indicates deficient Liver.
Shao Yang (Fire/excess heart and Deficent Kidney) will have strong O-ring at HT7
indicate excess heart, and strong o-ring at KD7 indicates deficient Kidney.
