ABOUT AUSTRALIAN ANIMALS:
Australia probably has
between 200,000 and 300,000 species,
about 100,000 of which have been
described. There are some 250 species of
native mammals, 550 species of land and
aquatic birds, 680 species of reptiles, 190
species of frogs, and more than 2,000
species of marine and freshwater fish.
More than 80% of our plants, mammals,
reptiles and frogs are unique
to Australia and are found nowhere else in
the world. Some of our Australian
animals are very well known like
kangaroos, dingos, wallabies and wombats
and of course the koala, platypus and
echidna.
Found wild only in Australia are nearly
half of the country's birds and 87 percent
of its mammals. At least 93 percent of its
species of reptiles, amphibians, flowering
plants and conifers are unique to Australia.
That amounts to 3,000 endemic vertebrate
animals and 18,000 endemic plant species.
What is Australia's national animal?
kangaroo
The Australian coat of arms consists of a
shield containing the badges of the six
Australian states symbolising federation,
and the national symbols of the Golden
Wattle, the kangaroo and the emu. By
popular tradition, the kangaroo is accepted
as the national animal emblem.
