Learning Intent: At the end of week 3, the learners can compose clear and coherent sentences using
appropriate grammatical structures: aspect of verb-simple tenses of verbs by;
1. identifying the correct tenses of verbs.

I. Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it
is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass
against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil Amen.
II. Motivation
Read the short poem below. Take note of the underlined words.
The Gentle Wind
The branches of the trees wave
When the gentle wind comes.
The grass rustles
As I listen to its sound.
It whispers sweet things on my ears
And blows my hair about.
Petals of flowers sway
As the bee flies above.
It soothes my senses
Before it fades.
III. Concept Notes
THE PRESENT TENSE OF VERBS
The underlined words are verbs. They are often defined as doing words or action words that express
what is being done. They tell what a person, animal, or thing does.
Read the poem again. Note the underlined verbs. What tense do these verbs denote? What form do these
words have?
The present tense of verbs expresses state of being or actions that happen in the present time.
Below are some examples of verbs in the present tense. Which verbs express state of being? Which shows
action?
1. I am a Grade 5 student. My teacher is strict but kind.
2. You are in Grade Two. Your teacher treats you very well.
The present tense of verbs is not limited to action or being in the present time. It may also be used to express
the following:
1. Habitual Action
Examples: I brush my teeth twice a day.
She jogs at the park every Saturday.
2. General truth
Examples: The moon revolves around Earth.
We need food, water, and air in order to survive.
There are 60 minutes in an hour.
3. Future time
Examples: He starts driving his new car on Tuesday.
We leave for Europe next week.

Tense indicates the time of the action or state of being expressed by a verb.
1. The simple present tense uses the base form of the action verb when the subject is plural.
Examples: The boys gather firewood in the forest.
They play the guitar well.
2. The base form is also used when the pronouns I and You are used as subjects.
Examples: I prepare my things before going to school.
You carry the bag of your sister.
3. However, when the subject is singular, -s is added to the base form of the action verb.
Examples: The girl helps her mother.
She bakes cookies every Saturday.

THE PAST TENSE OF VERBS


Read the following groups of sentences. Take note of the underlined words.
1. Last summer, Alfred visited his relatives in the province.
2. He stayed in his grandfather’s house.
3. He engaged himself in exciting activities together with his cousins.
4. They played native games with the other children in the neighbourhood.
5. They pastured the carabaos in the open fields.
The underlined words are verbs in the past tense. They show actions completed in the past.
1. Most verbs show the past form by adding –d or –ed to the base form.
2. The past form is the same for all persons/subjects-both singular and plural.
3. Words and phrases like yesterday, last week, last Monday, a week ago are time expressions that indicate past
time.

THE FUTURE TENSE OF VERBS


Verb phrases such as will be, shall celebrate, shall hold, shall write indicate actions or state of being in a
future time.
1. Use shall and will plus the base and simple form of the main verb to express an action that will happen in a
future time.
2. I and we generally follow the helping verb shall.
Examples: I shall join the declamation contest.
We shall need your assistance.
3. Use will in most instances to express future action.
Examples: Father will talk to us later.
He will award medals to the winners.
4. Time signals such as tonight, next week, tomorrow are expressions that tell future time.
Examples: We shall leave at dawn tomorrow.
Daniel will submit his news article this afternoon.

Direction: A. Encircle the action verb in the parentheses that agrees with the subject of each sentence.

C. Find out if the following verb phrases show the future time correctly. Put a check (/) before those that are in
correct form. Write the proper verb phrases for the wrong ones.
