Abstract
Good ability in listening means having the competence to comprehend information during
listening activities. However, listening skills are still considered one of the most difficult
English language learners skills, although they have been learning English for few years.
Therefore, this study was designed to gather information about the students challenges in
listening activities, their perspectives on listening subject, and their problems on listening
subject.
   1. Introduction
1.1 Definition of Listening
There are a lot of definitions of the term “listening.” Helgesen a2.1 nd Brown (2007: 3)
define that listening as an active process in which listeners select and interpret information
that comes from audio-visual to determine what is going on and what they already know. It
means that in making sense of the input, they use only part of the incoming information. At
the same time, interpret means that in trying to make sense of the input, listeners use the
background of knowledge and the new data to decipher what is going on and figure out what
speakers intend.
Ronald and Roskelly (1999) define listening as an active process requiring the same skills of
prediction, hypothesizing, checking, revising, and generalizing that writing and reading
demand; and these authors present specific exercises to make students active listeners who
are aware of the "inner voice" one hears when writing.
Based on the definitions above, it can be concluded that listening is an input of material, and
students can produce what they hear and can transfer it into text or spoken language. For
students, it is important to use in the teaching and learning process.
1.2 Definition of Listening Comprehension
Listening comprehension encompasses the multiple processes involved in understanding
and making sense of spoken language. These include recognizing speech sounds,
understanding the meaning of individual words, or understanding the syntax of sentences in
which they are presented.
   2. Literature Review
                                                                                                2
2.1 Problems in Listening
Listening is an inseparable skill of learning a second language, without a doubt. Though it’s
very significant, the problems about listening have newly started to be examined. To have
success in listening, issues about listening in a second language should be first identified.
                                                                                               3
Assalamualaikum wr wb and good morning. We are from group listening. Our members are
Tiara Regita Putri 006, Firdayani 014, Andira Risfiani 034 and me, Jasmine aryanti

problems in listening. We interviewed students and teacher in SMA negeri 1 Torue, there are
Diva Anissa from 12 Science 1, Ayu Dewi from 12 science 2 and Aditya bima from 12
social. The teacher name is ma’am Ni Putu Yustari S,pd.
And now I will present problems in listening
   1) In schools, students are not taught listening comparison.
(It isn't easy to learn student listening because the teachers have never taught it, so
   students must learn independently.)
in the school, they not taught listening. but listening is often in the test or quiz when study.
So, they only study listening when their teacher give them the kisi-kisi or an overview of the
questions that will be on the test.
   2) Native speakers who are difficult to understand.
Unfamiliar accents, both native and non-native, can cause serious problems in listening
comprehension and familiarity with an accent helps learners’ listening comprehension.
   3) The difference in accents. So the students are difficult to understand the words
(Most of the audio from listening uses a British accent. Meanwhile, students often hear an
   American accent.
The difference in accents is also very influential because when we listen to it, we cannot
   understand the text.)
   4) Lack of focus when listening.
(Due to some of these problems, we can lose focus and can't work on the text.)
   5) Unfamiliar Vocabulary
(If students know the meaning of words, this can arouse their interest and motivation and
positively impact the students’ listening comprehension ability.
Many words have more than one purpose, and if they are not used appropriately in
their appropriate contexts, students will get confused.)
                                                                                                4
2.2 The solution to the Problem
Students who already know the problems in listening begin to adjust and get several
solutions. The solution is as follows:
1. Start learning how to answer the test.
2. Often listen to native speakers.
3. Learn to focus while on a test.
4. Listen carefully.
5. Trying to practice skills by watching films without subtitles and songs in English.
6. Teachers should provide students with different types of input like lectures, radio news,
films, TV plays, announcements, everyday conversation, and interviews.
7. Teachers should help their students to be familiar with the accents of different native
   speakers.
8. Teachers should give their students the necessary feedback on their performance because
it can promote their error correction, increase their motivation, and develop their
   confidence in listening exercises.
9. Teachers should ask their learners to always listen to music, documentaries, and news on
the radio and television, talk to native speakers face to face or on the Internet to create
and reinforce a good habit of listening in themselves.
10. Teachers in schools start teaching and provide listening material to students so that at
some time if the listening test is held again, students can answer the test easily. and also
increase listening practice, multiply vocabularies so you can understand what you hear.
Listening is one of the most fundamental pieces of learning and teaching English. To be
successful in listening, learners should develop some strategies such as taking notes during
listening, making practice, or having methods for feeling relaxed during listening.
   3. Conclusion
We can see it from the results obtained from research conducted by high school students.
Listening is a subject that is rarely found. Listening is only taught to prepare for the national
exam. There are still many difficulties in listening comprehension. It is hoped that we can
easily resolve listening comprehension problems, and students can easily answer the listening
                                                                                           5
test. It is expected that this study's findings contribute to the improvement of teaching and
learning in listening comprehension.
