Sweet Addition

Subject/Grade Level: Math/ 1st grade

Time/Duration: 45 mins (2-3 days)

Objectives

● Students will be able to use a starting number and count on to find the solution to an
addition problem. Students will be able to construct number sentences that include a
solution to an addition problem.

Standards/TEKS

● 111.3 Mathematics (b) (3) (E): Explain strategies used to solve addition and subtraction
problems up to 20 using spoken words, objects, pictorial models, and number sentences;
and

Anticipatory Set

How many scoops of ice cream scoops do we have? How many cherries do we have ?

Teaching: Input/Mini Lesson

● Ice Cream Scoops

● Cherry and Ice Cream manipulatives
● Cherry Math worksheet
● Ice Cream Scoops worksheet
● Addition flash cards

Teaching: Modeling

● Review how to count ice cream scoops and ask questions such as “How can we equal this
ice cream cone to the other ice cream cone”.
● Using the Cherry Modeling posters, show the process of counting the number of cherries
in the first basket. Write that number above the first basket on the line. Write a plus sign
in between the two baskets. Direct the students to count the number of cherries in the
second basket. Repeat the process of counting, but do it together as a class. Show the
class how to determine the sum by combining the two baskets of cherries, beginning with
the first number and counting on to find the total number of cherries.
● Repeat the process with the additional slides or poster
Teaching: Checking for Understanding

● I will have students come to the white board and create additional problems and solve the
addition problems. Students will be individually asked additional problems using addition
flashcards with the teacher while other students work on the class worksheet.

Questioning strategies:

● Ask students to write number sentences

Guided Practice

● Invite students to come up to the whiteboard and create solutions to addition problems.
On the whiteboard, I will have students count the number of cherries there is in each
basket to find the total number of cherries. I will instruct students to write the number of
cherries in each basket, have students write number sentences and add the numbers
together to find the total. After displaying addition equations on the board, I will ask
students to participate in modeling the solutions in front of the class.

Independent Practice

● I will assign students to complete the Ice Cream Scoops worksheet and the Cherry Math
worksheet. For students who might need additional support, I will provide manipulatives
for students to use during their calculations such as dominos. I will be referring to the
Cherry Counting in each basket example if students need help.

Closure

● Conclude the lesson with a sweet treat! Give each student seven cherries, raisins, or other
small pieces of fruit and have students practice creating different combinations of
addition facts using the sweet treats.
