ritmo  uses  layering  and  looping  of  two  measure  motifs  in  the horn,
tenor  trombone,  and  tuba  to  achieve  a  dense,  polyphonic  texture
that  grows  and  changes  over  time  in  order  to  accompany  a  vibrant
melody  shared  by  the  two  trumpets.  the  tuba’s  motif  is  a  variation
on  the  claves  rhythm  seen  often  in  latin  dance music, thus the name
of the piece (ritmomeans rhythm in spanish).

ritmo  was  first  recorded  by  a  student  brass  quintet  at  the
interlochen  arts  camp  in  the  summer  of  2019,  using  a  bass
trombone  instead  of  a  tuba.  the  duration  of  ritmo is approximately
three minutes and forty nine seconds (3’49”).
