Case Study of UTI

This document summarizes a case study of a 57-year-old female patient presenting with recurrent urinary tract infection symptoms including pain and burning during urination, lower abdominal pain, back pain, and blood in her urine. Laboratory tests showed hematuria and elevated white blood cell count consistent with infection. She has a past medical history of diabetes, hypertension, and UTIs. The doctor diagnosed her with another recurrent UTI and prescribed a 10-day course of antibiotics (loprin, xobix, caricef), vitamins (zuprical), and a urinary tract protectant (utrin). The prescription was analyzed for accuracy and potential drug interactions between the medications prescribed.

URINARY TRACT INFECTION

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any parts of your urinary

system your kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Most infections involve the
lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra.

Women are at greater risk of developing a UTI than are men. Infection limited
to your bladder can be painful and annoying. However, serious consequences
can occur if a UTI spreads to your kidneys.

Doctors typically treat urinary tract infections with antibiotics. But you can take
steps to reduce your chances of getting a UTI in the first place.
