Title: Artist or Scientist? Why not both!

Summary: Students will choose from a list of 5 environmental topics (weather and climate, atmosphere,
water, energy, and plants and animals) on the Climate Kids website through NASA. They will make a
“poster” using a graphic art app to bring awareness to the present-day issues of the topic they chose.
Learners: 5th graders during a science class

Standards:
ISTE 6d: Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their intended
audiences.
ISTE 7d: Students explore local and global issues and use collaborative technologies to work with others
to investigate solutions.

List the state standard:

5-ESS3-1 Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect
the Earth’s resources and environment. (SEP:8; DCI: ESS3.C; CCC: Systems)

Timeline of activities (Instructional Procedures):

(I Do) State “Instead of teaching you something that I choose, I am going to let you all pick a topic that
interests you! Since this is during our science time, I am going to limit it to topics that pertain to our
environment.”
(I Do) Using the projector pull up the link https://climatekids.nasa.gov/menu/weather-and-climate/
(I Do) State “This is the website we will be using that has a number of different topics for you to choose
from! As you can see there is weather and climate, atmosphere, water, energy, and plants and animals.
Each topic has a number of different subtopics. You only have to choose ONE subtopic to focus on.”
(I Do) Tell the students that the goal is to make a graphic art poster that highlights the issue that they chose
(I Do) Tell the students that they only have to write down three facts about their subtopic in their science
journals
(We Do) Tell the students to open their iPads and go to www.climatekids.nasa.gov, but to not start pressing
things until you say
(We Do) Show the students an example. Go to “Atmosphere” then click on the subtopic “What causes air
pollution?”
(We Do) State that now that your subtopic is open you will try and find three facts that pertain to the topic.
Tell the students that your three facts for “What causes air pollution?” are
1. Air pollution happens when solid and liquid particles and certain gases end up in our air.
2. Breathing in polluted air can be bad for our health
3. Car exhaust, factories, and wildfires can cause air pollution
(I Do) State that after they have their three facts written down, they can make their graphic art poster in
relation to their three facts
(I Do) Show them the example poster (a printed copy)
(We Do) Tell the students that they can talk to their table members about their ideas, but everyone must
have different facts written down
(I Do) Tell the students that they will have 15 minutes to come up with three facts
(We Do) After the 15 minutes are over ask for volunteers to share what their subtopic was and what their
three facts are. Get at least 6-8 volunteers
(You Do) Tell the students to open the graphic design app and begin working on their “poster” (the posters
will be turned in digitally on google classroom)
(You Do) Tell them that they are not graded on their artistic ability, but on their creativeness, and how well
it relates to their three facts
(I Do) Let the students know that if they finish early there is educational games on the Climate Kids website
at the bottom that they can try out
Assessment Plan:
The student’s learning will be measured based on their journal entry of 3 facts (if they were correct, if they
related to their subtopic, and if they are not repeated facts). The student’s learning will also be measured
by how much effort and creativity they put into their poster, and not their artistic ability. They will also be
graded on their focus (time management), and their attitude during the project.
