Metallurgy Lab 2

The document discusses a lab report on heat treatment of mild steel. It describes the objectives of understanding heat treatment processes and exercising them on a steel specimen. It then details the electric furnace apparatus, including its temperature range and heating methods. Finally, it outlines the theory of heat treatment, classifying processes based on cooling rate and selecting processes to achieve desired mechanical properties like strength, hardness, or softness.

LAB REPORT # 2
Metallurgy Lab

Reg # 3462
Section E
Submitted to Sir Zohaib
Demonstration of Heat treatment on Mild Steel specimen.

Objectives
 To learn about heat treatment process.
 To understand how heat treatment process is exercised on a mild
steel specimen.

Apparatus Description
ELECTRIC FURNACE
In various thermal processing applications such furnace is used. It has
refractory insulation and High temperature thermal processing units.
These furnace available in various configurations which includes bench
or cabinet, continuous or conveying, tube or muffle, vertical, etc.
Specifications

Temperature Range
Temperature range is defined as maximum temperature at which the unit
may operate and still maintain rated performances.

Heating
Heating is generated through arc, combustion, electric or resistance,
indirect, contact or conduction, induction, infrared or radiant, natural
gas, propane, oil, etc.

Theory
Heat Treatment Process
 Combination of heating and cooling.
 To get the desired mechanical properties i.e. ductility , toughness ,
hardness , brittleness and machinability etc
Classification of Heat Treatment Process
Heat treatment process is classified into three categories on the basis of
cooling rate i.e.
 Normalizing
 Annealing
 Hardening
Criteria for selection of Heat treatment process
Selection of H.T process is based on our required mechanical properties
such that:
 To ensure Strength and hardness, Normalizing is done.
 To enhance softening, refining of grain size and improving
machinablity, Annealing is done.
 To get hardness and brittleness, Hardening is done.
