Critique
Divergent is Veronica Roth’s debut novel, Veronica Roth also tries to
convey her point by referring to the Bible. The Erudite, the faction
obsessed with knowledge, represents the Serpent in the Garden of Eden.
Abnegation, Beatrice’s faction, represents humanity before the fall of the
Bible - completely selfless and without ambition. He said that “people
don’t kill each other,” before the Erudite takeover begins, which the Bible
says mankind was before they even fell from grace. Since one of
Erudite’s main goals is to destroy the Abnegation (exactly the same as the
Serpent and Eve), the whole story has a strong resemblance to the story.
Veronica Roth was also a religious person, as mentioned in the
acknowledgments (488), so this is probably not a coincidence. Because
the early Christians opposed the Roman way of thinking (the weak would
be crushed) and stood alone with the Bible as their guide, the Bible (at
least for Christians) meant thinking differently. Biblical references place
the antagonists in this book in the same role as the antagonists in the
Bible, so the allusion to the Bible sends the same message that biblical
history does - that thinking is different. empowers people to control
themselves.
The final way the author attempts to convey his idea to the reader is
through the use of minor themes of the book. Throughout the jacket and
book cover, and within the book, the idea of selection is taken in a
different way than it usually is. Almost at the very beginning of the book,
Beatrice said “I will decide on a faction; I will decide the rest of my life; I
will decide to stay with my family or leave them.” The cover and covers
of the book also have phrase “ONE CHOICE CAN TRANSFORM
YOU” (A choice can change you,) written in their entirety in large and
bold letters. The way choices work in modern society is for people to
make those that matter all the time.Instead of a single choice that
determines a person’s future, it is determined by hundreds of choices. The
theme of the book, which does not fit a stereotype empowers people, to

different factions and choose the one they will spend their adult lives in.
Beatrice's Divergence prevents her from making a choice. a do - he
doesn’t fit the stereotype about how people should behave.
The other half of the theme comes later in the book. When the
people who make the choice and commit to it are controlled by the
Erudite, the unreasonable point is made that fits in leading to the loss of
power. Beatrice, on the other hand, does not live up to the standard. He is
left untouched by Erudite control, and reflects the rise in a world of
powerless man. Combining those two yields a theme.
