 Read and comprehend a passage to answer the questions to cite textual evidences
 Learn to paraphrase and quote to show evidences.

Text Evidence
Text – Text is a book or other written or printed work, regarded in terms of its content rather than its physical
form. It is the main body of a book or other piece of writing, as distinct from other material such as notes,
appendices, and illustrations.

Evidence – Evidence is a proof. It is the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or
proposition is true or valid.

Text Evidence – It is citing proof in the reading.

How to provide text evidence after reading the text? (ACE)

Answer the question using prior knowledge and inference.
Cite evidence in the text to support your thoughts or opinions.
Explain your answer with evidence by paraphrasing or directly quoting.

A - Answer the question using prior knowledge and inferences.

Restate the question in your answer.
Example: Why did Paul Revere ride through the towns?
Answer: Paul Revere rode through the towns because….

Prior Knowledge: When a reader has previous experience or has already read about a particular topic, he will
have some insight or knowledge to the topic before reading it. Having prior knowledge on a topic will help the
reader comprehend it better than someone with no prior knowledge. It is almost like having the upper hand if
someone is already familiar with a topic. It provides extra support to the reader’s thinking process.

Inferring: It is an educated guess or reading facts and evidence to reach a logical conclusion or opinion.
Making inferences while reading is a strategy that will help you understand the text at a deeper level. It is best
to draw a conclusion or form an opinion by finding two or more supporting details in the reading passage. It
also helps to look for words or phrases that may express a positive or negative tone.

C - Cite evidence in the text to support your thoughts or opinions.

When answering questions about a reading assignment, look back at the text and find proof for the answers
within the text.
 Highlighting the text is an effective approach to mark the evidence!
 Use of magnifying lenses.
 Color code the answers / evidence.

1
E - Explain your answer with evidence by paraphrasing or directly quoting.
Paraphrasing: The author explains… The text shows…

Paraphrasing is to translate something into your own words. When putting information into your own words, it
makes you think about what you’ve read and you will be more likely to understand and remember it.

Use RAP:
Read
Ask yourself, “What is the main idea, key words, and important details”
Put the information in your own words.

Example: my dad and his friends are having a fantasy football draft. They each draft player and form their own
teams. They follow their team players throughout the season and get points for different victories. At the end of
the year, the person with the most points wins the prize. They have fun drafting players on their teams.

The author explains that her dad has fun drafting a fantasy football team with his friends. The keep track of
points each team earns and they award a winner at the end of the season.

Quoting:  The author says, “…”    The text states, “…...”  Quoting is copying exactly what the author is saying
in your answer. Make sure to use quotation marks!

Take Notes
When taking notes, you should take notes on all of the acronyms. It is a valuable tool for you to use with future
assignments. Interactive writing notebooks are a great way to get motivated.

Practice
Practice as a whole group, small group, or partners. Review the correct answers together.

Apply
You now have the strategies to use when providing text evidence from their reading. You should be able to
apply this knowledge when answering questions!

ACTIVITY 2: Citing Textual Evidence

Read the short passage and answer the questions carefully.

A. Everywhere around us, there are millions of tiny living things called germs. They are so tiny that they can
be seen only under the most powerful microscope. Some of these germs are no wider than twenty-five
thousandths of an inch!

Louis Pasteur, the great French scientist, was the first to prove that germs exist. The germs in the air can be
counted. The number of germs around us, especially in crowded rooms, is tremendous. Certain scientists
counted 42,000 germs in approximately one cubic meter of air in a picture gallery when it was empty. But
when the gallery was crowded with people, they found nearly 5,000,000 germs in the same place. In the
open-air germs are less abundant. There are fewer germs in country air than in town air. We see at once how
important it is, therefore, to live as much as possible in the open air, and for the rooms we live in to always
be well ventilated by fresh air.
