Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Lesson Title: Learning All About Shadows
Objectives:
Students will be able to obtain and communicate information to describe how light is required to
make objects visible.
Students will be able to Conduct structured investigations to answer questions about how
shadows change when the position of the light source changes.
State Standards: Standard 1.P.2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the
properties of light and how shadows are formed.
Context: I am teaching this lesson to allow 1st grade students to be able to learn about the
properties of light and how shadows are formed. Before this lesson, I will ask students a series of
questions that have to do with light and shadows such as “What are shadows?”, “How are
shadows created?”, etc. As well students will have previous knowledge as I will have them
watch a video that gives them the basic information on this topic. After this lesson students will
then be assigned into groups to do a worksheet based on what they have learned. The worksheet
will include questions for them to answer and areas for them to draw examples. After that
students will log onto google classroom and do the assigned quiz. I will be teaching students
about this to get them ready for the next topic of how the sun and moon affect the earth.
Introducing this topic will help students learn the basics of the sun and how it creates light and
how the light affects things such as shadows.
Data: For this lesson students will be placed into groups based on the data from the exit slip that
was given the day before. They will be placed into pods based on their data. Their will be three
different types of groups lows, middles, and highs. In this lesson, the student data will be
collected through the google classroom from the assigned quiz.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes): I will start the lesson by asking students if they know the
source of light? I will then ask if they know what shadows are? If they say yes, then I will ask
them to show me an example of both. We will review what we did in the previous lesson,
especially sunlight, darkness, etc. Then I will use the smartboard to show the students the video
based on the topic, linked in the materials, to give a base explanation about the lesson and
material that we will be covering that day. After this I will explain each station to the students
and get groups together. I will group students based on the data from there exit ticket the
previous day. I will then give the students an shape, this shape will tell the groups where to start
first. The groups that receive a triangle will go to teacher instruction, groups who receive a circle
will do collaborative work, and squares will work in the independent workstation. In addition to
telling them where to go, I will give brief explanations on how to use each of the tools that we
will be using.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes): In this portion of the lesson, we will start by talking
about what we already know about sunlight. I will ask the students to come sit on the carpet in
front of the smartboard. After the students share what they know, we will then bring up the game
called “Shadow Shapes” on PBS website. This game allows students to see how different shapes
create different shadows and how the light makes them. I will then ask students about what they
learned from the video. I will also ask them causes shadows to happen. I will also explain to
them why shadows need light in order to be created.
Collaborative (15 minutes): In the section the groups of students will be given a
worksheet that has different sections. They will do this after watching the video “Peep and the
Big Wide World: Shadow Play” by PBS Kids. At this station the groups of students will watch
the video together on their iPads and then fill out the given worksheet and tell how shadows are
made and give examples of shadows within the classroom. The video will tell them about
shadows and how they are created. After they have finished the worksheet, they will save the
pictures of their examples until the end of the lesson. At the end of the lesson groups will be
chosen at random to tell the class about their examples they drew.
Independent Digital (15 minutes): During this portion of the lesson students will watch a
video and complete a word search. This allows students to refresh what they learned at the
beginning of class. The students will watch the video and then complete the given word search
that allows them to learn the key terms. This will give them extra help on how to spell the words
that they are learning in the lesson.
Closure (20 minutes): At the end of the lesson all of the students will play a Kahoot
game about what they have learned that day. The student with the highest score will receive a
mini keychain flashlight of their choice of color. They will use their iPads to play this game.
Kahoot will be an end of the day review game that I can use to gauge which of the students
understood the concept and which ones are still struggling. After this game I will randomly
choose groups to come to the front of the class and share their examples that they drew from
around the classroom from the Collaboration portion of the lesson. Here they will explain what
each of their pictures means.
Rationale:
“Light & Shadows for Kids” Video:
This video will help with introducing the students to this new topic. It is a short video about light
and shadows. In the video students will learn what makes a shadow and what a shadow is. They
will also go over how the sun plays a huge part in creating shadows and allowing different
objects, shapes, and people to have their own personal shadows.
Shadow Shape Game:
This game is made by the accredited company of PBS and uses characters that the students will
be familiar with from the PBS show of “Peep’s Big Wide World”. It is completely free, and
students will learn a lot from playing this game. While playing this game students will be able to
pick the shape, they want and see it’s shadow be created with the flashlight as it moves farther
and closer to the wall.
“Peep’s Big Wide World: Shadow Shape” Video:
This video is by an accredited company and uses a character that the students will be familiar
with, Peep’s Big Wide World. This video teaches them about shadows and how each shape has
its own shadow. Because it is from PBS kids the video is completely free, but it is still great
quality. It also shows the Peep and his friends going around finding different shadows. The
closed captions could be used on this video for hearing-impaired students.
Word Search & “Properties of Light” Video:
This webvideo is by a highly recommended YouTube channel that makes many different
educational videos. They review the properties of light and how they play a part in making
shadows. As for the word search this allows students to review how to spell the key terms from
this lesson and how to identify them when seeing them in text.
Kahoot Game:
Every teacher has used or heard of Kahoot. It is a great game and quizzing tool for all grades. I
will create a game myself so that I know it has questions that I want and customize other features
of it as well. This game will act as a quiz and review. It will help me to gauge which students
understand the material and which ones are still having trouble. Due to the competitive nature of
the game, it motivates students to get the questions right and hopefully get on the leader board.
