Lumbang, Rhommel
The account of Guillermo Masangkay shows that "The Cry" really happened at
Balintawak. On August 26, 1896, a meeting was held at the house of Apolonio Samson
in Balintawak. The leaders of Katipunan and the board of directors of the organization
were present. Delegates from Bulacan, Cabanatuan, Cavite ang Morong were also
present.
At about 9 o'clock in the morning of August 26, Andres Bonifacio started the
meeting to talk about starting the revolution. Some of the members did not agree and
believe that they are not ready yet. When Andres Bonifacio felt that he would lose the
discussion, he left the session hall and talked with the people who are waiting outside.
He said "You remember the fate of our countrymen who were shot in Bagumbayan.
Should we return now to the towns, the Spaniards will only shoot us. Our organization
has been discovered and we are all marked men. If we don't start the uprising, the
Spaniards will get us anyway. What then, do you say?" The people answered as one
"Revolt!"
The cedulas signifies the slavery of Filipinos so Bonifacio asked the people who
are ready to pledge their alliance to the revolution to put out their cedula and tear it into
pieces. He shouted "If it is true that you are ready to revolt... I want to see you destroy
your cedulas. It will be a sign that all of us have declared our severance from the
Spaniards."
