man who could not be a father and the prisoner who could not be free”. That there is
treasure at the island of Monte Cristo and Faria is the heir to the family that contains
the treasure. He wants to get the treasure and share it with Dantes because he

hidden passage in a cave. He finds a chest with the Spada family symbol and opens

Caderrouse, Danglars, Fernand, and Mercedes. It is also revealed that Dantes’s dad
died of hunger.
Danglar and Fernand denounced Dantes as a Bonapartist and mailed letters.

Danglars left and worked for a Spanish banker and made money off army supplies
Fernand joined the army and later moved to Spain and met Danglars. He would later
join the Greek army and get paid tons of money after his commander rewarded him.

Part 4 - Formative Assessment - Mood

Review the handout on Mood and its function in literature and answer the following
question in a short paragraph.

How does the Mood affect TCOMC? Choose one point from chapters 7-16 in which you
find the mood to be particularly important. Provide a quote and discuss what mood
Dumas is trying to create.

“It was all over; Dantes was separated forever from his old friend. Faria, his helpful,
kind companion, now existed only in his memory. He sat down on the edge of the
frightful bed, plunged in deep and bitter melancholy.” The mood set in this quote is
very depressing and lonely as in this scene, Dantes loses his only friend and wise
teacher in the prison and is back to being lonely.
