2. USING A SOCKET WRENCH, LOOSEN THE WHEEL
NUTS A LITTLE.
Clean off any rust or dirt on the hub bolts with a wire
brush, before loosening the wheel nuts.
NOTE: ● Do not remove the wheel nuts, but leave
them loosened.
● Hub bolts and wheel nuts on the right side
of the truck have right-hand threads, and
hub bolts and wheel nuts on the left side
Fig. 3 SM17-121 of the truck have left-hand threads.
3. JACK UP THE FRONT AXLE AND SUPPORT THE
FRAME WITH STANDS.
WARNING
When jacking up the front axle, make sure that the
jack is correctly placed to the axle, and then lift up
the axle. Do not get under the vehicle when it is
supported by a jack only. It is very dangerous be-
cause the jack might slip. Use safety stands which
Fig. 4 SM17-280 have sufficient strength and stability to support the
truck whenever you need to work under it.
Fig. 5 SM17-394
5. REMOVE THE SHOCK ABSORBER.
1. Disconnect the shock absorber from the shock
absorber pin.
2. Disconnect the shock absorber from the upper
bracket.
3. Remove the shock absorber pin from axle.
WARNING
The axle beam is unstable. Support it from the sides
when lowering the jack.
Otherwise, the beam may fall, injuring the operator
B
or resulting in malfunction.
WARNING
When striking, a metal tip may fly off on impact. Wear
safety glasses to protect your eyes.
Fig. 8 SM17-398
NOTE: Insufficient spread of the staked part will
cause damage to the threads of spring pin,
when loosening the nut.
3. Remove the front spring pin and thrust washers from
the spring bracket with a copper bar and hammer.
NOTE: ● When removing the left spring pin, discon-
nect the drag link from the pitman arm in
accordance with CHAPTER 12, STEERING.
● Do not damage the drag link dust cover.
4. Remove the lock nut, then remove the spring pin from
the shackle.
5. Using a puller, remove the spring pins.
WARNING
● The leaf spring assembly is heavy, weighing
about 25 kg (55 lb).
When removing, be careful not to drop it on your
feet.
● To assure safety, do this operation with more
than two persons.
WARNING
When striking, a metal tip may fly on impact. Wear
safety glasses to protect your eyes.
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT THE SHOCK ABSORBER.

4. MEASURE THE WEAR OF THE LEAVES.
Using vernier calipers, measure the wear of the
leaves. If the wear is more than 15% of the specified
leaf thickness, replace the leaf.
Specified leaf thicknesses: 10 mm (0.39 in.) and
11 mm (0.43 in.)
NOTE: It is best to replace the entire leaf assembly
if even one leaf is found to be cracked. If you
replace only the cracked leaf, the other leaves

WARNING
The specified torque should be observed for
tightening wheel nuts. Improperly torqued wheel
WHEEL NUT
nuts can cause the wheel to come off while driving.
This can result in personal injury and/or property
Fig. 37 SM17-981 damage due to loss of vehicle control.
When the vehicle, wheels, or wheel nuts are new,
the wheel nuts should be checked and tightened to
specified torque at 100, 500, and 1,000 miles since
they are not well seated. The tightening torque
should be checked with a proper torque wrench.
Torque for wheel nuts: 4,000 – 4,800 kg·cm
(290 – 347 Ib·ft)
