Introduction:

Profile leveling is taking the longitudinal cross section of a road to


determine the elevation of points along the center line of a rail way, high
way, canal, sewer system, and etc. This method is used to determine the
areas that should be cut or filled along the project, and to design the
most suitable gradients to which the ground should be worked.

Objective:
In this experiment we will learn about profile leveling and how to
use the data to determine the amount of earthwork needed.

Procedure:
We measured 50 paces, 10 at a time and marked their locations.
Then placed the benchmark outside of the field of work (in this instance
the road), and we measured its elevation to find the instrument height
(HI) later. Then we measured the elevation of each point.

(B.S.)

actual ground level.

Equation of the red line (RL):

y= 0.004x + 99.61

Area part 1:

RL at 10= 99.65

EB= 99.65-99.6= 0.05m

AE = 10(0.72) = 7.2m

AB= 10(0.72) = 7.2m

h=7.19m

A1= 0.5(7.19)(0.05)= 0.18m2

Area part 2:

EF = BC = 30

EB = FC = 0.05m

A2= (0.05)(30)(0.72)= 1.08m2

Area part 3:

CD= 10

FD= 10

FC = 0.05m

h= 7.19m

A2= 0.5(7.19)(0.05)= 0.18m2

Total area to be filled= part 1+ part 2 + part 3 = 1.44m2

Discussion and remarks
To find the area of part 1 and part 3, the height of the triangles was
found using Pythagoras theory, and the distance between the points were
found using the formula for distance between two points. Also, part 2 is
considered as a rectangle since the angle EBC is so close to 90 degree.
The line of the desired ground level helps us determine how much
earthwork is required, in our case it is filling.

Conclusion
In this experiment, we learned about profile leveling and how to
perform it using an automatic level. Also, we learned how to use its data
to determine the work that needs to be done in the site by using the line
of desired ground level.
