The wolves of Yellowstone
Until the 1800s, several species of wolves (Canis Lupus) roamed free across most of the United States, living in balance
with the animals it preyed upon and respected by native American populations. But this changed as more and more
settlers of European descent began to move into the American West.
European pioneer farmers were worried about wolves attacking their cattle. So in the early 1800s, the US government
proposed the total eradication of wild wolves, and provided funds to pay for hunters. Farmers willingly agreed to help,
embarking on their own extermination campaign, which saw wolves trapped, shot, and poisoned in huge numbers. Fewer
and fewer wolves were left in the wild, until in 1960, they were almost extinct in all American states except Alaska. Only a
few small populations hung on in the wild north of Michigan and Minnesota. Not even the wolves of Yellowstone National
Park were spared, despite Yellowstone being America's first national park, created in 1872 to protect 'natural wonders'.
Restrictions on hunting within the park didn't apply to wolves, and the last two grey wolves there were shot in 1921.
It wasn't until the 1974 Endangered Species Act that things began to change. This huge milestone for conservation
enabled the preservation of many endangered animals, including wolves. It's also lead to the gradual reintroduction of
packs of Mexican grey wolves, northern grey wolves and red wolves into thirteen American states. Initially wolves were just
brought in from places like Canada and released into the wild, but it was difficult for the animals to get used to their new
homes. When rangers kept track of one female northern grey wolf released in a park in Idaho, they discovered that she
had walked sixty miles on her first day because she was trying to find her old home.
Early in 1995, fourteen wolves were captured in the wild in Alberta Canada, then transported to Yellowstone National Park.
At first they were kept in pens for several months inside the park, to help them to get used to their new environment. Then
finally, the strongest male, the alpha male, gained the confidence to lead his pack out of captivity and into the national
park. That year, park rangers at Yellowstone announced that the first wolf cubs had been born in the park for 75 years.
The population quickly took off, and by 2003 the park was home to 174 wolves. However, the reintroduction of wolves into
Yellowstone has proved to be far from plain sailing. Before the wolves returned to Yellowstone, arguments had raged
about the benefits and drawbacks of reintroducing them. Whilst some argued that it would restore Yellowstone to its
natural state, others suggested that it would upset the ecosystem in the park, which had changed since the extinction of
the wolves.
Since then, biologists have been studying the impact of the wolves' return on the wildlife of Yellowstone. By far the biggest
effect has been on elk, the wolves' favourite prey. A decade after the wolves' return to Yellowstone there were about half
as many elk in the park. This was blamed on the fact that generations of elk had grown up without any fear of wolves. They
had become less and less concerned about predators, so it was easier for the wolves to catch them. And the more the wolf
population grew, the greater this problem became. Some people warned that the elk would soon disappear from the park,
and then of course, the wolves would disappear too.
Luckily, this didn't happen. Slowly, the elk got used to the wolves. They became more cautious, and avoided places where
it would be easy for the wolves to attack them. Slowly, the old balance of predator and prey was returning. But what the
wolves had done was to control the population of elks in the park. Surveys of the park's wildlife have found that has
generally been good for other species. The elk were eating too many plants and young trees, creating problems for the
animals who depended on these things for food. And when wolves kill elk, they tend to eat about half of the animal and
leave the rest. This has been great for animals which scavenge, like bears and birds of prey.
It's been a bumpy ride, and there have been some downsides to reintroducing the wolves. This proves just how difficult it is
to restore an ecosystem once people have meddled with it. Conservationists estimate that it will take many more years for
the ecosystem of Yellowstone to fully recover from the original extinction of wolves. But slowly the park is beginning to find
its natural balance again.
