Permanent nurseries supply seedlings on a large scale over many years, while temporary nurseries have a shorter duration and supply local needs. 2) The key activities involved in nursery operations such as seed collection and storage, seedbed preparation, watering and care of seedlings. Proper site selection, layout and maintenance are important. 3) Social forestry programs use extension nurseries to provide fruit trees and other plants to communities to encourage tree planting and sustainable forest management. ANALYSIS

1. Forest nursery is important because it is the area where you can get good quality of
seedlings. The forest nursery is where the seedlings grow. Forest nursery compose of
different kind of species. The forest nursery has different types, it include Permanent
Nursery, Temporary nursery, Extension nursery and Individual or villagers nursery.
The important of Permanent nursery is that it supplies plant for many years and
usually in large numbers it also supplies the Temporary nursery. The permanent
nursery also is mostly owned by the government to supply and provide the project
that the government created for the tree planting activities. The Temporary nursery
also is important because it supply the local needs even it is just temporary. The
important of Extension nursery is it used in social community forestry programs. It is
also important because it provide many plant species such as fruit trees and others.
The Individual villagers is also called backyard nursery. It is important like for the
farmers to provide or produce their own seedlings for planting.

2. The difference between Extension nursery and Individual nursery is the extension
nursery is used on social community forestry program. The government is the one
who created the extension nursery to provide plant species to the community. They
also used the extension nursery for planting trees near the area in the extension
nursery. They used the extension nursery not to travel the seeds far away to the
planting area. While the individual villagers nursery is that the farmers is the one
who created it. They used it to provide or produce their own seedlings. It is located
at their backyard area. The seedling that they produce they only used it to plant in
their own area or land. Other individual nursery is that the government provide the
seeds only the farmers propagate the seedlings and plant it in the area they own.

ASSIGNMENT PAGE 7

I am going to established a permanent nursery and used it commercially. So I can

create a sustainable livelihood in the community. The community will produce
different kinds of tree species seeds and I will buy it from them. The permanent
nursery that I created also provide jobs, it is another way to help the community.
The seedlings that the nursery produce will be sold to different places. So it can
sustain the financial needs of the nursery. It will inspire others to plant fruit trees so
in the future they can produce fruits and used it commercially.

ANALYSIS

1. Yes it is important to considered in selecting and establishing a forest nursery.

The first factor is water supply, water is the most important factor without water
plant cannot survive. Second, is the size and the ownership of the area. You need
to know the size of the area to know how many seedlings you need to plant. And
the ownership of the area so you can decide what type of forest nursery your
making if it is permanent or temporary. The location also should be considered,
the permanent nursery should be near in water supply. For the temporary
nursery it should be at the center of the plantation. The area should be
accessible for transportation and easy to access for the delivery of materials. The
topography, the flat area is good and it is easy for the activities in the nursery.
The ground cover the site must be free from big stones and no big trees so its not
difficult for the preparation of the area and not costly. The soil condition must be
good for the seedlings to be healthy. This factors is needed so you can have a
good nursery site. To have a good quality of seedlings.

2. Yes we need to follow the main operation in forest nursery. To have a healthy
seedlings, to have a good quality of forest nursery. To prepare what soil you
need to use, if it is a good quality of soil that suit the plant your planting,
preparing the soil medium that will be using. To know the right fertilizer for the
minerals you need for the plants. To know the proper way of sowing the seeds.
To know what materials you need to have, to protect your nursery disasters. The
irrigation or the or the watering system should be easy to access. To what kind of
pesticides and insecticide you need to apply if necessary. The site also should be
free from destructive animals to prevent damages.

16sqm = 1,563 no. of yakal seeds

A. 1,563 NO. OF YAKAL SEEDS.

PAGE 16 ANALYSIS

3 .We need to have a layout and design the establishment of forest nursery to know how big
the nursery site your making. You need layout and design for the arrangement and to
organized your nursery site. To know the numbers of seedlings and the space of the seed
bed. And how many seedbeds you need to use. How many polethelene you need to have in
your nursery site. To establish how big the area, including your hardening off area. The
design and layout is needed to protect nursery site from harmful animals. It should be
strong from destruction.
PAGE 16 ANALYSIS

4.If I am going to be a manager of the forest nursery im going to use all the methods of site
clearing. You need to use all these methods because not all area are the same. The
methods are depending on the area, like for example if the area is no existing big trees you
can use chemical site clearing but it should be minimize the use of chemical for its not
environmentally friendly and it can damage young seedlings. The machine clearing is
needed if the area has big trees existed. And it is also not time consuming but it is also a bit
costly but it is very effective for the site clearing. If the other side of the nursery site is full of
grasses, fire clearing is needed but it need proper and closer supervision. If your not in a
hurry for the preparation of nursery manual clearing is applicable.

PAGE 17 ASSESSMENT

1. Yes it is necessary. The purpose of the preparation is to provide the necessary soil
condition. To have an organized forest nursery. To have a proper design and layout
of the nursery site. To ensure that the nursery site is free from any harmful insects
and animals. Other preparation also is for you to have knowledge related to forest
nursery. You need to have a long term plan for your forest nursery. If you have a
proper preparation for your nursery site it is easy for you to move around. It is easy
for you to organized the things in the sorroundings. The nursery site is clean.
SOCIAL FORESTRY

PAGE 3.

Social forestry and community are both responsible for conserving the forest. It will guard
the forest and to improve it. Social forestry is the one who manage the forest to the benefits
of the community. They improved the forest from deforestation to afforestation. Their main
objective is the forest protection and helping environmental, social, and rural development.

significant role in forest management and in decision making. They facilitate the support
from the government. Social forestry is important to the forest community they are the one
who make the forest more sustainable, they also help to avoid the over exploitation of
forest product. The strong forest community can protect forest from deforestation and they
can improve the forest health.

PAGE 15 ASSESSMENT 1.

PICTURE 1.

The picture 1 show that the land is in the stage of deforestation. The kaingin and cutting of
trees is getting worse. It shows that the program of social forestry is nowhere to be found in
the area to manage the forest well. It shows that they really need a social forestry program
to make the area sustainable so the community can benefit it in the long run.

PICTURE 2

Picture 2 show that the community start planting trees. It seems that they knowhow to
protect the forest for their own good to make it more sustainable. Planting trees for the
better environment.

PICTURE 3

Picture 3 show that the people surrounded the forest are the one who can benefit what the
forest can provide. They practice what are the goals social forestry for their benefits. It show
